Windows XP experts? Question.

A friend's laptop recently picked up some shitty spyware that is clogging everything up on their system. So I suggested running Spybot to clear up the junk on their machine. So they bring the laptop over and we install spybot, run it, clean all the problems it finds and then go to reboot. Upon reboot when you go to sign into windows with their password, it signs in, then immediately logs the user back out to the sign in screen. Now I'm sitting here looking like a dick It has XP with SP2 installed. Any ideas what could cause a logout like that?

You lost your winlogin32.exe or winlogin64.exe file, or it's corrupt. Basically you're fucked. What you can do is try to repair your OS with your original XP disk. It's very important to use the key that came with the laptop. That "should" repair the file.
If you don't have it you can repair with a different XP disk but it will wipe out all your registry. Basically you'll be left with all the data but no programs.
Good luck it's a bitch when it happens. It happen to me about 3 weeks ago. I got nailed with Internet Security 2010(which is a Trojan).

Hoping the HP System Recovery disk will clear things up. I found step by step instructions for fixing the issue that is in place now, but at this point removing the worm that is causing the major issues is looking like quite a bit of fucking around. They have agreed to a full reinstall of windows, so I might as well wipe and reinstall.

Yeah I use windows and the issues are getting so old..every girl I know has problems with their windows laptops...I am suggesting to all of the replace with a mac.. I am gonna do the same thing i am getting sick of re installing the operating software every 6 months because some new program corrupted a file or get spyware. I am sure with Macs there is issues but not as prevelant.

SP3 has bene out for well over a year. Had they switched to that they probably would have avoided that mess.

Probably.

If I get the OK, I'm just gonna go ahead and install TinyXP.

Worm.Win32.Netsky, just another one of those "ÒMG your computer is diseased buy our antivirus software now!" things. Pretty sure I removed the exact same thing, or something very similiar off my brothers computer abouta year back. Had the same changed wallpaper. Didn't remember it being such a pain in the ass to get rid of, then again, this machine cough up like over 100 results in Spybot, so it's pretty diseased all around.

Saw a couple removal tools, nether seemed to work. Followed manual removal instructions I found on one site, which didn't seem to catch all the files. Figured I`d run Spybot to see if it could grab it that way. Which it didn`t seem to. But hey, who knows, after a restart I can`t even get into windows to tell.

Fuck it, waiting for the go ahead tonight and I`m cleaning that shit for a reinstall.

I think that`s gonna be my new terms for these type of deals. Clean whatever you want to keep off, and I`ll reinstall, but I`m not gonna dump hours into trying to remove one finicky little bitch worm.

Simply install any antivirus software ( Eset Smart Security 4) forks great for me, scan the hard drives ... clean up if you find something, format the hard disk and install Win XP with SP3. That's my suggestion!

For those who believe that re-installation is mandatory after a system file is corrupted or deleted due to infection, the solution in that instance is: Click START, then RUN and type:

sfc /scannow

Then press ok

Make sure that you have your original Windows XP CD ready, if it does find files that have been modified.

If you have to get into the machine to copy data before the reinstall, one of these could maybe help.
