An experimental aircraft has set a record for hypersonic flight, flying more than 3 minutes at Mach 6 ? six times the speed of sound.

The X-51A Waverider was released from a B-52 Stratofortress off the southern California coast Wednesday morning, the Air Force reported on its website. Its scramjet engine accelerated the vehicle to Mach 6, and it flew autonomously for 200 seconds before losing acceleration. At that point the test was terminated.

The Air Force said the previous record for a hypersonic scramjet burn was 12 seconds.

its a new propulsion technology.. if it works well they can incorporate it into bigger military airplanes..

think flying from New York To London in 45mins to drop a bomb and fly back..

besides mach 7 is fucking faster than pretty much every missle out there.. so how do u shoot an airplane going that fast down??

And it's a giant waste of money. What do they need it for? Just to proove that they can fly that fast? Nobody's every going to travel at such a speed. The g forces would crush you.

someday we would be able to minimize/mitigate the gforces inside the aircraft so we can travel as fast as we want...

Mach 6 for 300s was the goal. It did mach 5 for 200.

mach 5 = 3300 mph @ 50,000'

So it flew ~200mi while at mach 5.
