Paypal withholding funds.. Going to be a new processor trend?

Didn't like reading this one..

An explanation of payment holds and how they apply to you

Your business is important to us. That's why we're committed to providing a fast and secure payment service to you and your customers while keeping our prices competitive. We're also committed to clearly communicating changes to our policies and procedures. So, we're writing to let you know about a change to your PayPal account.
From now on, payments you receive will be temporarily held in a pending balance. This pending balance helps make sure that you'll have enough money in your account to cover any buyer claims.

Payments will be held in a pending balance for up to 21 days. For example, if you receive a $100 payment (after fees), the $100 will be held in a pending balance for up to 21 days. After 21 days, the money will be available for withdrawal.

The money may be released sooner if:

We can confirm that the item was delivered
Your buyer leaves positive feedback. (Applies only to eBay items.)

We know this is a change in the way we do business with you and we hope you understand that you haven't done anything wrong. In deciding whether to apply payment holds, we review many factors including transaction activity, business type, and customer disputes.

Payment holds are often applied to new sellers who don't have a lot of transaction history, sellers in traditionally high risk industries (for example, travel or tickets), or sellers who've had a high number of claims filed against them.

If you're a PayPal Money Market Fund customer, you'll continue to earn interest on the total balance while your money is held.

To learn more about this policy change, please read our latest funds availability policy
We appreciate your business and look forward to a continued partnership. Don't hesitate to contact us with any questions.

Thanks,

PayPal

This is not unusual with Paypal. They may hold all of your transactions or just a few. Many eBay sellers get this one. I did but they only held like two or three out of fifty or so transactions.

Paypal sucks.

Get a different processor.

Sally.

So what??
You're either in business or not, and that's the price of doing business.

PP is a totally free ride compared to most. If your prod is so shitty it warrants a PP Resolution that is your problem. If your crap is in a class that is susceptible to PP Resolutions and/or CC charge backs then so be it.

just sayin ....

Good to know. Thought it was strange since I've had this particular account since around 2001 with 0 refunds and lots of completed trans. Another biz account didn't get the email. So must have been something else that triggered it.. Oh well, guess I'll see what happens.

Stupid comment. Most people who sell things acceptable to paypal would use paypal as it is so widely used (and until now, had no holdbacks).

Nothing to do with how good your credit is or whether you need a merchant account.

I have my reasons for using PP and others.. This particular business PP is a requirement because it's how 99% of business is done.

Same here.

Although the 'hold' was different that 21 days, and it was a percentage. Not the whole amount. Called them about it, they claim to review your account every 60 days and may or may not remove that limitation.

It does get to be inconvenient when you have thousands or a lot of transactions and dollars running though the account, and that 'percentage' becomes thousands in no time.

Really? You're right, it was a stupid comment. I'll certainly take your astute knowledge of PP to heart.

Just consider yourself lucky you don't have a merchant account that requires a quarter mil deposit+10% 6month rolling reserves.

I guess they explained your $$$ volume, the type of items you sell, and your dispute history, all weigh in to your "holdback" (if any)?

Correct.

* The volume, or dollars running through the account.
* The type of transactions (virtual or tangibles).
* Any disputes also weigh in the decision. Although I only had one in the entire history.

It doesn't take long to rack up thousands dollars when 75% of your web hosting clients are paying via PP or CC via PP. Plus the activity of money coming in and going out. All of those will put you on PP's radar.

I learned early on it's better to present them with your intentions 1st than to just implement something on your own. I have never had a problem selling/reselling adult domains, adult hosting, adult templates, adult graphics, etc.

So when I see someone bitching about PP I question their business model first.

True dat. Best to fax them the docs when they ask, explain what you're doing, the type of business, and simply be forthcoming about it. I have done that with ARIN in regards to getting IP's, as well as with PP, EPASS and other vendors. Typically you do not have an issue, or simply switch to someone else if there is going to be a problem.

I tell new hosting clients the same when they ask for something out of the ordinary. It's better to tell your host what you are doing, why you are requesting something out of the ordinary then to be unplugged for T.O.S..

I have no issues with PP. They explained why they want to hold their 10% based on the volume and virtual transactions. It's understandable when you are dealing with non-tangibles. It's their company and service to run however they see fit. If I want to use it, I play by their rules.

It's a privilege, not a right.

Wasn't throwing barbs at you or your business onwebcam. Guess I'm overly sensitive to people dissing PP, :-)

If you're marketing online then PayPal is a 'must have' to be competitive. If adult had any volume then PP would be here front and center. But, the adult segment doesn't hold a candle to the real world.

Let me be clear, they will burn your ass at the stake if you sell a turnkey hosted functioning adult web site.

Holds began about 2 years ago.

PayPal also requires rolling reserves for some sellers, but that's totally different than holds.

Holds affects most all sellers, even including sellers that should be exempt occasionally getting them too.

Sending goods with Delivery Confirmation and entering that number on the PayPal Ship To page will greatly speed up the release of the funds - often released within a few days after the delivery confirmation tracking number is fetched and matched by PayPal's automated system.

Ron
