In the best case scenario, humans want to sit inside a huge mechanical robot and control the giant robot from inside the robot. A car is not good enough - it has to be a machine that looks like a person controlled by the person. The mechanical robot walks around on two feet. Think of films like Transformers, Voltron and a music video by Black Eyed Peas with the giant walking robot on the street.
