The rule of thumb for eating healthy

Don't eat 90%* of what's advertised on TV.

* 90% is a very conservative number

Agreed, with one exception.

You'll have to pry the KFC Big Crunch from my cold dead hands.

Also, don't eat the majority of what is on sale to eat at a British train station or convience store. It is mostly brightly coloured poison.

I guess that could fall in the 10% in your particular case.

It was bothering me yesterday when I was at London Bridge station. In the one little area there was Krispy Creams, the Pasty Shop, Burger King, some sausage stand thing and a bagel place that pretends to be healthy but has more than your entire days saturated fat allowance on one of their bagel sandwiches.

Then, I had to stop at a petrol station on the walk home from my local station and all I could see was a wall of saturated fat and sugar in shiny wrappers.

It never bothered me before I started to try to eat healthier but now it has become an annoyance.

very true....

we don't see many vegetables or fruits commercials (with the exception of FREEZE VEGETABLES, which are not as healthy as Natural Vegetables you buy on a greengrocery)

Eat only what a scientist didn't 'cook' for you. If there are ingredients you can't pronounce or ingredients that are vague (like 'mixed spices') then it's a good bet that's not real food.

So I guess "yellow dye #5" is out of the question?

twinkies are bad for other reasons than dye. And yes, if your "food" isn't appetizing enough without adding artificial colouring, then perhaps you need to try again.***

It really is about what you eat. My local grocer she is 83 and is very vibrant and active,I thought she was around 60.She said she just watches what she eats.

True. I think I would have a hard time finding, for example, rolled oats without a barcode.

The best way to start a healthy eating day:

Eat a banana with breakfast. If it helps, pretend to deepthroat it before you take a bite. If I eat a banana at breakfast with my oatmeal, I tend to eat fruit all day.

Try to avoid anything that even has a list of ingredients on the packaging. Although I often have no choice, I prefer to be able to tell what's in the food I buy just by looking at it.

I heard an interesting rule that stated "Don't wat any food your great grandmother wouldn't recognize" - that should free you up from having to read ingredient labels.

A good idea until I remember that my grandmother has never had Indian food, rarely eaten Chinese food and certainly isn't going to know about quinoa.

Eat meat once or twice a week. Stay away from all fast food. That'll cut down on the fat big time.
