:stop Cozumel, Mexico Earth Quake Photos from Björn Who has Retreated

Quote from Björn:
"Near my apartment in Mexico City. Everything was moving 50 centimeters each direction. No chaos, no panic, all people helping, getting water to the people who try to save people under the collapsed buildings. A school with young children collapsed nearby, 30 children died and some are under the building waiting to be rescued No robberies, people organize the traffic for ambulances themselves, getting water for people who need it, collecting medicines, motorbikes helping doctors to navigate trough the city. No electricity, internet is bad"

This is a horrible situation for a lot of people that lived through the collapses.

Being trapped under rubble in a space where I can't move is my worst fear. I would rather fight a grizzly bear to the death than to die suffocating in a small space.

You get in a truck and take the goods yourself.. There is no such thing as direct to the victims. There will always be overhead, logistics, people who need to be paid because no ones working free ..ect..ect..

Given a long enough timeline, the probability of it happening is 100%. How does that make you feel?

You have a point, and they really need Machines and generators since power is out there to look for trapped survivors faster.

I've thought something along those lines before. I think it's something that if it's going to happen, there's not a damn thing you can do about it. One moment your sippin a latte, and a few seconds later you're laying face down with two inches of space all around you and 100 broken bones. It's fucking scary.

Update!
The children of the colleague are safe. It is the school that is in the news ;Colgeio Rebsamen. They are still looking there. The first video i took in that street, they stopped everyone to give the rescuers space.

I was in Mexico city when it happened, but left Mexico City today. I went to a safer place with a girlfriend i stayed at in Mexico City. I travel around the world and i am now in Mexico for 6 months.

Was a crazy earthquake and i run into the Streets from the first floor. Everything looked fine from my concominium. Till I walked around and saw what happened just 200 metres from the apartment. There i took the pictures near the school with children from 4 - 14 years old that collapsed and an apartment complex and shopping mall.

People where holding signs what they needed, lamps, batteries, water, tools. But all shops closed. The wallmart in front of the school also was closed, there would have been enough supplies there... Today the shops openend, so the shortage of water and lamps is solved. I expected people to just kick in some windows, but they didn't. Motorbikes and cars drove around town looking for shops that where still open. But you needed cash, no electricity and internet to pay with creditcard.

Finaly a big store opened, that had a generator i think, to serve food and give people free internet and electricity to recharge cell phones. I bought all their batteries and other things. Home depot also opened their doors a few hours later to sell tools. Next time would be better if all stores stayed open, but everyone wanted to go home to to their family what is logical. But there wouldn't be shortages if big supermarkets would have stayed open to supply water, batteries and lamps after the first shock.

I saw the parents in front of the school waiting if their children where save, some getting good news, other bad.

The Mexicans kept disciplined, organizing help for the victims, started to organise traffic very fast so all the people and ambulaces could get trough and it wouldn't be a big traffic jam. There where so many people that wanted to help that they had to sent them away and let them come back later for a next shift.

I didn't wait for the aftershocks and left the city in the morning by car. Didn't have water, electricity, Phone connection. Could be much more damage when there are aftershocks cause some buildings are weakened. Or maybe this was just a pre shock and the big one still has to come. My girlfriend now might get fired cause she don't want to be in Mexico City now and at least wait a few days.

Luckily i was on the first floor and just a few meter to the parking lot. I was under the door but realized i better sprint that extra few meters and get away from the building. Outside i saw the neighbour grandma on the 5th floor with her grandchild of 16 years. They could only wait till the quake stopped. Several buildings nearby collapsed.

Last night a lot of people slept in their cars on the parking lot, afraid to go inside.

I for sure won't live in Mexico City, or other city with earthquake warnings. If you do; make sure you Always have cash; have 20 liters of water; food; batteries, lamps, medicines and a big first aid kid, a shovel and other tools. Very handy would be a radio also, we had to sit in the car and listen what has happened.

Great respect for the Mexicans who is still are working like a big community helping each other out.

True. But they will often turn away the help they need as well. Remember another person entering the city is another person that needs to be fed housed and transported.

Some of my dog training team wanted to help. We have S and R dogs. We were told no.

Some times the best thing to do is locate someone you know there. And help them help others.

They have machines, they only needed to get transported after the earthquake.
Mexico City is a city of 20 million people with a lot of building taking place.
So there are many many many generators and tools in the city.

Problem was that some Phone networks went down and no communication possible. I heard what happened from Holland cause my Dutch provider looks automaticly which network is available and i get messages from Holland how big it was. Telcel (the biggest) wasnt available in my neighbourhood. So motobikes had to drive to central points to get doctors from there and tell where buildings where collapsed. Also a lot of helicopters circled around to see where help was needed.

There is be electricty know where it is needed. The big machines arrived around 4 hour after the quake and also had big lamps. The time inbetween people digged by hand to survivors.

Now they asked for tools to prevent the buildings to collapse.
I have seen that at least 20 new buildings and higways that are being build.
When i left the city in the morning, they started building like normal.
I think they could give the workers a week off, and transport all that materials to where they are needed most.
But that is my logic. Wallmart should have opened and give the water for free and later sent the bill.
Things that could be better next time.

I asked in a group for foreigners in Holland if there are local projects or if someone is starting them. I will keep you informed. The red cross opened a number, but that is only emergency money. And probably they have enough, other countries sent millions. The help for the people to rebuild houses will be the most expensive. But some will have insurances. Now restaurants give free food to the rescuers and people who need it. Mexico is a big city and luckily not everyone is poor and they collect food and clothings etcetra.

After the first earthquake 2 weeks ago Chiapas was hurt badly. That is a realy poor region in Mexico. Those people don't get support and still don't have the materials or money to rebuild their houses. In that region people make like 50 - 300 USD a month. The houses there are simple and cheap.

There is a page where you can donate.
Mexico City Earthquake Donations: How to Help the Victims | Money
Personaly i wont give to those big organisations that Always have big cash for emergencies. I wait for projects for people that will be forgotten.

We went to San Miguel de Allende yesterday morning by car.
Looks my girlfriend must go back on Sunday to Mexico City to work for an international company.
I must decide to be stupid and go also, or stay here or go to Isla Mujeres.

Got this Message from Uber Mexico. People got rides for free.
Is translated from Spanish:

We hope you and your loved ones are safe. To help recovery efforts following the earthquake of today, we have sought to keep our application in operation.

On the recommendation of the Civil Protection authorities, please avoid at all costs affected or at risk areas.

If you are already at home, evaluate the infrastructure to identify possible damages. If they are serious, report them to 911 and go to a safe place (such as a relative or friend). You can ask for a Uber and use the free trips.

If your house did not suffer damage, please stay safe and with much attention to all the information provided by the authorities. Your safety and our safety is our priority.

If you took a trip in Cd. De México, Puebla or Cuernavaca from 1:15 pm on Tuesday, September 19th, we will reimburse the cost directly to your account.

To the rest of the users in these cities, from 3:00 pm, we have credited 2 trips of up to $ 150 pesos each to move safely home.

Uber will cover 100% of the cost of these trips, the profits of the drivers will not be affected. In addition, dynamic fares and cancellation fees for travel have been temporarily disabled.

We will continue to work on implementing measures to help our communities in emergency situations. We will be communicating more in the next few hours.

#FuerzaMéxico

I think there is more to come regarding earthquakes. I am thinking i won't go to Mexico City, but it feels bad. If something happens, there isn't much you can do. I waited two hours for her to arrive from her job after the quake. Than i realized the quake was much worse than i thought cause see saw the collapsed buildings while she was driving home and told me.

Ps, we are more "friends with benefits" and know eachother 2 years from my trip 2 years ago. Not planning for marriage.

A dead man can't help much. I said i can help with mortgage and cost while she looks for another job in a safe city. Or just travel with me a few months while looking for another job. But that also means her brother and sisters must start helping their mother and not just my GF what she is already doing alone for 14 years... I wont support those profiteers.

I am open about my relationship(s) That is better when you travel around the world and planning to do that much longer.
She knows i won't be living in mexico city, too much pollution, already been held at gunpoint once, too many people.
But i am able to offer alternatives for her to leave the city also.
