and your research sucks, protein isnt' the issue. B vitamins and iron are.

Sure, there are other sources of protein other than soy (beans, almonds) , but the variety is not that good compared to normal diet.

Beef, chicken, eggs, salmon, cottage cheese.. I could never turn that down

All rich in protein and other good stuff.

Hey Rockhard! Congrats on eating better and losing weight.

Personally I love meat and could never go vegan. I'm not convinced that stopping any 1 food group will make a giant difference. And even if it did, I could never give it up. I love me some McD's once in a while, and I must, must have Pizza at least twice a month.

What I try to do is to just balance everything out. Eat meat with veggies, swap a big dinner for a small salad once in a while, treat myself to a Quarter Pounder here and there, and most importantly, exercise. (I walk in the Winter, and job, bike, swim in the summer). It's how I keep myself so fucking sexy!

I completely agree that protein isn't the issue, the "protein craze" of the last decade has caused us to way over hype the necessity of mass amounts of protein and undervalue carbs in our diets. I didn't really list any research but listed those animals because there's still the notion that you can't gain muscle mass without meat/dairy. I get plenty of iron and B vitamins, including b12, so it isn't an issue with me.

So is it your contention that the human body hasn't evolved enough at this point to handle a strict plant based diet? I'm genuinely curious since I've enjoyed your fitness posts over the years and respect your knowledge.

I did Paleo for three years prior to this year and was diligent about eating only organic vegetables and meats/fish and avoided all grains and legumes. I enjoyed it and for the most part it "worked" for me, however, I was consistently running into energy issues and always felt like I was missing something. As new research began to poke holes in what we thought the diet was of early man (Paleo), I began to look elsewhere.

In my first 30 days of eating vegan, I experienced the same lifting gains it took me 6 months to accomplish while eating Paleo. The last 30 days is the first time I've been off all fitness supplements. I attribute this to more energy and less inflammation in my body.

Something that has always stuck with me is an interview I did with a renowned southern California cardiologist during a postgrad research project 10 years ago. During our conversation, we got sidetracked when he mentioned he had recently converted to a vegan diet and I was curious to find out why. He said he had performed over 4000 open heart surgeries and there was such a noticeable difference between a meat eater and a plant eater when he looked inside the body, that he had to make a change in the way he ate. I won't go into the details, but I remember that interview so vividly and I strongly considered going vegan at that time, but could never go through with it.

I've always been in shape, played college sports and competed in triathlons, so its not something I'm doing because I need to lose weight. For years I hated the vegan mantra of coming across as superior and the whole fanatical animal rights aspect and it kept me away. I don't believe you have to be vegan to live a healthy productive life to 95, but I believe it gives me the best chance. It seems to be going more mainstream now in the fitness world, especially with so many professional athletes changing over. https://www.cnbc.com/2018/01/31/why-...ing-vegan.html

I cycle slow carb, works amazing.

Your mention of the cheat day boost made me think that.

By definition, yes. Gluten is a water-insoluble protein that is formed when water is mixed with wheat flour. Wheat flour is not vegan. Vegan flours have no gluten.

The formation of gluten creates "elasticity" that allows the "stretching" of pizza dough. Dough made with vegan flours are rolled or pressed out. It's just not the same thing.

To be fair, he said vegetarian pizza. So gluten should be "allowed"

Still vegan - over a month now. I've lost some sixteen pounds.

Breakfast was oatmeal, lunch was veggie soup. Easy.

you'd do the same thing vegan or not if you just don't eat garbage. a few ounces of lean meat once per day is not going to cause weight gain.

Indeed.

And also one important thing - when you are vegan you have to "look for food" so to speak, you simply can not grab anything you come across etc.
So you naturally eat less calories based on this circumstance alone.

Some people do not think about this point of view

I still have the occasional pizza, but when I do it's vegetarian. In fact, I've been playing around with a potato based crust which has been interesting.
I wouldn't say that you are losing weight from cutting out meat so much as cutting out processed sugars and possibly processed grains.

I went on the Whole30 diet and went from 255 to 225 in about 6 weeks.

Very similar to how you are eating, only with meat, but in the correct portions, no alcohol and nothing that is processed. You have to make everything from scratch. And no grains (rice, wheat, cereal, bulgur, quinoa, etc)... Though I did eat quinoa with lots of other things in it like beans (also not supposed to eat), corn, celery, carrots, etc.

But, meat is not sustainable as a commodity... so cutting it out ain't a bad thing. But I do loves my steak...

we are not all the same.

physical activity also matters.

some people respond better to more weight training and less cardio, some vice versa.

same thing goes with nutrition, if you are doing better with cardio - go high carb vegan, proteins are overrated anyway.

i do better with more cardio and high carb nutrition and i am not vegan so i avoid fats, eat carbs and relatively little chicken as protein source.

better avoid processed foods, sugar and salt if you really want to slim down.

also NO alcohol.

Maybe?

I topped out at 275 lbs about five years ago. It's been a struggle to get down to my ideal weight. I've long since cut out garbage, no fast food, occasional pizza but that's about it.

It's working so far for the past month so I'll continue.

When summer kicks in I'll be biking a lot more. It's already warm here in Northern California so I've already started biking more -it's been great.

My weight went through the roof when I quit smoking.

I quit booze six or seven years ago. I run and bike - mostly biking every day.

Leather belts, shoes, upholstery, masks.

If you eat all raw foods that are of plant origin, but you still buy and wear leather accessories and shoes; and exploit animals in other ways beside food - you would not be considered vegan, but a raw or live foodist.

Whatever works for you but i really don't think cutting out meat is ideal. Just my opinion. I eat oatmeal for breakfast, a salad and yogurt for lunch and typically a few oz of skinless/boneless chicken breast or some other lean cut of meat with a small starch and steamed or raw vegetables for supper. i'm 5'10" and typically weight between 145-150...i also don't work out. Not in the past couple years anyways. I'll have a couple slices of pizza for supper maybe once a month and a few beers now and again but gaining weight has never been much of an issue for me.

I could care less about the animals. I'm not doing this to save the world or because I have concerns about humans being on the top of the food chain.

I still wear leather sneakers and I feel fine.

With that said, how many leather masks do you have?

I have one; works great in cold weather and rain.

Sounds like you are more vegetarian than vegan.

Oh no, I'm not only one... Our cat eats raw turkey (only its chest, but not legs for some unknown reason), so he is also not a vegan. He's da man like me, and not a lil pussy like my wife

Give it a couple more weeks and you're down to 100lbs. Damn those vegans look unhealthy;-)

Good luck!

He's trying to say that you're wrong. This is what "Baddog" does. You can't have a discussion with Baddog about anything without being told you are wrong or you're an idiot

We“ve just enjoyed a McDonalds & we love meat, we eat meat most if not every day, well, meat & fish...

beef, pork, chicken, turkey, duck, all meats, all fish, loving pollock & cod, all fresh, you can“t not go a few days without some fresh meats or fish, especially in tapas, paella & other lush foods!

Sod vegan, half of the time, not eating these foods is as unhealthy as eating say fast food daily

This is the first time I hear that vegan should include no leather shoes and belts etc.

Difference between vegetarian and vegan - vegetarians can not eat animals, but can eat stuff coming from them (milk, eggs). Vegans do not eat both.

A vegan may choose to go gluten free, but many don't and that choice is completely independent of whether one is eating vegan or not. Neither the process nor the final product in the creation of wheat gluten involve any animal products, so one can eat wheat flour and still be eating vegan.

That is the classic farinata, around here is used to top the real pizza (pizza y fainį).
