From what I've read this was an unavoidable accident.

Even if the driver was in control it wouldn't have made a difference - there was no time to react. The pedestrian walked in front of the car without warning. If the automated driving system didn't detect it in time, there is no way the driver would have seen it.

It's very odd that a pedestrian would just cross in the middle of the street in the dark like that.

Some homeless do that to shake down drivers for cash. I know this because I was a passenger in an accident just like this except the guy landed in the back hatch back window. The cops told us how this usually goes down they get a little bump ask for the cash out of your wallet ti settle and walk off. Others who are opoliod addicts with no cash or contacts for it you get a trip to the hospital and lots of pain meds.

I hit a wild boar in exactly the same situation. I was driving down a dark road through a forest and it came out of nowhere. I saw it when it was 1 or 2 meters in front of the car as it ran across. Motherfucker didn't look before crossing either

I'm not a fan of the idea of cars driving themselves...not one little bit.

But you can't blame the car for a heaping dose of human stupidity. That was unavoidable.

Think about these people that were fined millions of dollars or got jail time for hitting & killing someone on the street in an accident that was unavoidable.

Now we have driverless cars that will not be financially responsible for the deaths they cause. More proof that politicians are bought and laws are mostly about money

An alert person would have seen that lady.
She was WALKING the bike.
Even if there was not enough time to stop; there absolutely was time for an alert driver to apply the brakes instead of just staring with the mouth open.

That video is total proof that automated cars will only create more distracted drivers.

Bro she was breaking the law and got hit by the car. No one driver would be held responsible for that

A couple of nights ago I had to head downtown at around 2am. A homeless guy, wearing all black and grey, started crossing the street on my green light. I saw him in time to avoid hitting him but just barely. My speed was under the limit too and I still almost hit him.

I kind of think he wanted to be hit, or, he was drunk or something. He was crossing a 3-lane road that is well lit, with very bright and obvious red/green lights and walk/don't walk indicators. He gave me the finger when I drove past.

I would hope not but 95% of cars don't have a camera recording every moment, unfortunately.

The bumb that my friend hit while I was the passenger lived and sued. We had to go to court and the insurance paid him. Exact same scenario as the video.

I read an article today that said Uber's sensors should have seen this person and stopped in time. I disagree personally, but the article went into detail about how the sensors work. The article also said the driver's job was to take over in such cases and he clearly didn't.

The daughter (or sister?) of the person hit and killed got an attorney yesterday so it will be an interesting case for sure. From my point of view no matter what that person walked in front of a car driving at 40 mph.

I knew someone who got hit by a car, fucked her up good. The accident investigation determined it was her fault and the only thing she ended up with was a pile of medical bills.

Growing up, they used to show this every afternoon on channel 11. That and my grandfather backhanding me when I stepped off the curb before the light changed is forever ingrained in my memory.

Here's something I just thought of that a computer can't sort out...

When you're in hairy traffic situations which could easily turn into gridlock, what is that one thing that keeps it moving? It's the shorthand human drivers use to communicate, whether it's a look, a flash of the headlights or a simple wave that says "you go first dude". A computer will be the biggest asshole driver on the road with no concept of chivalry or courtesy, which is essential for keeping traffic moving and tempers down.
