A Florida commissioner who opposed gun control protests spurred on by the school shooting in Parkland was caught on video shooting and killing a suspected shoplifter at his military surplus store.

The Tampa Bay Times reported that on October 3, Lakeland Commissioner Michael Dunn shot 50-year-old Cristobal Lopez after the man allegedly stole a hatchet from Dunn’s Vets Army Navy Surplus shop in the Tampa suburb.

Police released the security footage of the incident after questions arose whether the commissioner was justified in shooting Lopez.

Dunn reportedly confronted the alleged shoplifter and asked if he was going to pay for the hatchet he tried to pocket. In the surveillance video, the commissioner is seen grabbing Lopez’s shirt and fires at least once before the man falls to the pavement just outside the store’s door, shakes for a moment, then falls limp.

In the last three minutes of the video, Dunn is seen pacing in and out of the camera’s range and does not attempt to resuscitate him. By the time police arrived, Lopez was dead.

The Tampa Bay Times noted that in July, the commissioner hosted a counter-rally to a March for Our Lives gun control protest at his store. The report also noted that this was the second time Dunn had shot someone, the first being an accidental and non-fatal incident when he was 19.

Dunn has not been charged, and Lakeland police and the Florida Attorney General’s Office are reportedly investigating the shooting death of Lopez, described as a “transient” agricultural worker.

I don't think they would release the video if they didn't plan on charging this week. They're just getting public opinion behind them first.

The suspect's arm was on the door and then he extended it back and towards the gun. I would speculate that the shooter believed the suspect was reaching for the gun.

The guy was a thief, only. He was walking out of the store. There was no reason to kill him. You report the offence to the cops and let the justice system do its thing. The guy took the law into his own hands and now someone is dead.

The unarmed man was being held at gunpoint and forced pulled back into the store as he walked out.

You have to be of petty mind to think anyone deserves death in that circumstance.

The gunman was breaking the law by trying to forcefully detain him at gunpoint.

I don't know what the law is at that location, but in most places stores are allowed to physically restrain shoplifters.

This guy always fantasized about the moment he'd be the hero who shoots a brown criminal. He grabbed the man's sleeve not because he saw a brown person stealing something, but because he saw his fantasy moment slipping away. That's when he decided this may be as close as he'll ever come to finally firing his gun at a real live brown person. It may or may not be a theft, but he had to finally bust his nut after 50 years.

That's most "carry" gun people I just described. They're destined to shoot someone eventually....if not the scary brown person then maybe someone they're close to. Maybe their own kid or themselves.

That is not how Zimmerman told it to the police or the jury. He said he followed Martin and Martin jumped him and attacked him. He was bleeding. I think Zimmerman is a piece of shit, but at least with blood and wounds on his body he had some ability to claim he was scared for his life.

This dude shot a guy in the back who was trying to get away. These days, who knows, anything could happen. I still think he is going to jail. I think he will plead down to some lesser charge and end up getting a bunch of years instead of life.

The audio of Zimmerman calling the cops. There is no video or audio of the actual confrontation. Had there been, Zimmerman likely would be in jail right now. All they had was Zimmerman's word and physical evidence, of which there wasn't much.

I guess we will have to see about this guy. I watch that video and I see zero reason to shoot that guy. Maybe a jury will see it differently.

There were two witnesses.

A woman heard someone running outside her window in the direction of Zimmerman just before she heard the fight. This is strong evidence that Trayvon ran up on Zimmerman as he claimed.

Another man saw the fight and Trayvon was on top of Zimmerman, pinning him down and hitting him (story consistent with Zimmerman's and the head injuries). Zimmerman yelled out to him for help, but he didn't get involved and instead went inside and called 911. The shooting happened when he was doing that and can be heard on that 911 call.

911 dispatchers have zero authority over the public. That is just someone giving their opinion on what would be the safest thing to do.

That doesn't matter. What matters is the actual conflict. Also, he was charged with Murder One which means they would have had to prove this was premeditated. Murder Two means there was no premeditation. There are many people who believe had Zimmerman been charged with Murder Two he would have been convicted.

All that, however, doesn't matter in this situation. This dude was clearly trying to leave the store and the store owner shot him in the side and back as he was trying to do so.

I will be very surprised if he doesn't go to jail for a very long time.
