Coal ash is 100x more radioactive than nuclear waste

https://www.scientificamerican.com/a...nuclear-waste/

the waste produced by coal plants is actually more radioactive than that generated by their nuclear counterparts. In fact, the fly ash emitted by a power plant—a by-product from burning coal for electricity—carries into the surrounding environment 100 times more radiation than a nuclear power plant producing the same amount of energy.

Did you not read the clarification at the bottom?

"As a general clarification, ounce for ounce, coal ash released from a power plant delivers more radiation than nuclear waste shielded via water or dry cask storage."

So, it's not that it is more radioactive, the problem is that it was not being contained. Perhaps they've gotten better at it in the 12 years since the article was written, and 31 years since the source they cited for that statistic.

yeah that's a huge clarification. As a lot of drywall is made with coal ash these days.

you have to dispose of the ash just like you have to dispose of the radioactive cake or whatever is left...

The new generation nuclear reactors are even better. Sadly most countries in the developed world are slowly getting rid of them altogether or already have.

Our port is doing a 500,000,000 expansion to export more coal to China over next 15 years. A lot of it for steel production. Let it ride!
