@helmuc gif uses only 256 colors(it was more than enough 10 years ago). for some that level of quality is just to low, for most of us is sufficient. But a big gif (250x250 or bigger), with more than 2-3 frames is bigger than a flash banner(newer tech, better compression .. but also more power hungry) and looks uglier. Take a look on my portfolio's header. i could have done that header in gif but.. without using same effects, bigger in kb, and noisier.
Anyway both are old and have their advantages and disadvantages. It's a matter of choice.
