No wonder people are bitching about Google showing tubes for most keywords and their own "quality" sites tanking every day...

I posted a thread the other day in the sell and buy forum, looking to buy hardlinks. Boy was I shocked at the sites I got sent to look at... For fuck's sake people, how do you think Google is supposed to like/rank a site with 120+ outgoing links in the footer? That's a fucking linkfarm... Add to that the fact that the sites it "trades links" with do just about the same thing and welcome to clusterfuck land.

It's not Google's fault that tubes rank well. It's adult webmasters' fault, 'cause they know fuck all about SEO and usability.

Oh and BTW, $20/mo for a footer link on a PR1 site with 200+ outgoing backlinks, now THAT is a good deal! :1orglaugh

Your analysis is spot-on, soup-to-nuts. The amount of time spent on tubes, the fact that they're usually visited after the site you want to rank (where did the surfer go next?), and a number of other factors don't help either.

That'd be true if every site built by awm's was a pile of shit, but there are plenty (thousands and thousands and thousands) that aren't, that just don't get the same amount of organic links and never will because they don't give away the farm.

I been saying time and time again that the best thing to get traffic these days is to build tube sites under the domain you wan traffic for you make money by using the affiliated content plus you can send traffic to your main site by pop under. page close and redirecting

Keyword research and learning how to do it right will get you farther with getting traffic than anything else.

Good post. 93% of the link sellers in buy and sell are selling useless links. Even if they are high PR. Their sites are heavily interlinked, on the same IP addresses and filled with a boatload of outbound links. Some are selling links from sites on IP addresses in different C classes, but then they put Google Analytics code on all their sites.

Not entirely. Some of us build sites for the purpose of surfer retention and make sales on them as our priority. Link sales are not even a secondary revenue stream, but rather a tertiary one. Believe it or not, some of us still focus on quality presentation and original content produced by qualified staff members. And this approach results in never once being negatively affected by ANY SE update over the last 10+ years. Your site is only as good as the ones you associate with ;)

SEO is all fucked up and you have to weed out the bullshitters or just learn it yourself.

Also, linking based on relevancy to your site is better than linking based on PR these days. Even G says PR isn't calculated anymore in their algo.. :upsidedow

The next time someone mentions a Class C to you in the context of SEO, especially if they are trying to also sell you a server package, just smile politely and walk away. Those "in the know" can tell you why, but it'll just cause a shit-storm to talk about it here.

That's not to say it won't matter in the future, but right now? Well, do your research, don't listen to the "group think" that abounds.

Here's what he means: Class-C IPs matter ONLY if they're hosted on different networks/hosts. Nameservers matter. So does IP WHOIS. Basically if you have all your sites with one host, doing a whois on the IPs will give you away. Furthermore, if you have all sites on the same server, regardless of what IP each site uses (different class A, B or C, doesn't matter) you'll also give yourself away when someone looks at the mail server record set up for the server.

I'll take it one step further, though: I have yet to see concrete evidence that Google does anything beyond simply logging the IPs and Class C's, at least for SERP purposes. Having worked there, I have a lot of people I'm still in touch with. Unfortunately, it's all cloak and dagger as fuck, but when I was considering SEO hosting, they were like "uh, no." :thumbsup

That being said, even if they don't regularly log more than IPs and C classes, it doesn't mean they won't look at them, when they suspect foul play. Case in point, lots of blog networks got penalized and de-indexed earlier this year, along with many of the sites linked to from them. Turns out pretty much all of them were hosting all their sites on one server.

Granted most people's private blog networks won't draw nearly enough attention to themselves as the commercial ones (made solely for selling links and blogposts), you still run an unnecessary risk of getting nailed, if you host everything on the same server.
