So...I just started watching Doctor Who

The newer one, from 2005. This show is awesome and Chris Eccleston is great as The Doctor (I am aware that he is only one of many Doctors) and Rose is so hot, I'd slip her the beefstick, any day! I was stand-offish about this show, at first. When I was a youngster, my parents would watch classic Who on the public broadcasting channel (same channel as Sesame Street) and my brother and I would tease the hell out of them.

Now, I'm all grown up and realize that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
I have been living under a rock and now have 8 years of The Doctor to catch up on.
Thanks to Netflix, this will not be too difficult a task!

Any Whovians in the building?

Loved all the Eccleston and Tennant seasons – but could not get into the Smith guy at all. He ruined the dynamic or something. ymmv

DamianJ 04-12-2013 08:39 AM

Tom Baker FTW

Sarah_Jayne 04-12-2013 08:40 AM

You know I am.

Eccleston was a great way to kick off the new series but you are soon going to meet my vote for the best Doctor of all time and not just because he is tremendous eye candy.

He isn't Tennant but I'm with him now. He's grown into the character but he needs better assistants. Sorry, to the Amy Pond lovers but she was just 'meh' for me and, without making this a thread that Tofu can't read without huge spoilers, I hated River Song.

I started the same place you did a few weeks back. I'm on Season 3 now, and things have changed up a bit.

I can't wait to see how this progresses. I'm on Episode 9, Season 1. I've met Harriet and
I dig her. She's fucking awesome!

Come out to LA and join myself and Tofu for the - quickly developing - 50th anniversary episode viewing party. I won't be mad if you don't bring cupcakes.

Peter Cushing FTW, Just joking! Although Tom was the Doctor I grew up with, Mat Smith is doing a tremendous job (It's just a pity that he's been lumbered with some of the weaker stories of the new series).

Agreed and he had huge shoes to fill. When he started he felt really young but now he's aged up. You can see the years of time travel in his stance. However, yes, it is a shame that he has the writer that wrote some of the best episodes of the new series (Blink ..as we all know) but yet is getting really weak stuff in comparison to Tennant.

Choopa_Pardo 04-12-2013 12:50 PM

Love the good Doctor! Big fan. I feel you about Amy Pond, a meh character but holy moly, what eye candy! She's beautiful! Smith's new companion is also a major babe.

I agree with you on Amy, though I liked her better than Rose, who I always thought needed to wash all that makeup off her face and fix her roots. :)

Love River, though. And I do wish they'd give Matt better scripts.

That describes about 8/10'ths of all female celebs. And a few males as well. ha

Interesting. I liked Rose which was hard for me because I had to erase the pop career of the actress from my brain. I've believed the relationship between her and her Doctors more than the others recently. The make up and roots thing made her look exactly like the kids that live in her area of London looked like at the time.

But then I am the one that liked Donna (more challenging because I hate the actress generally) and thinks that they totally wasted Martha.

Loki 04-12-2013 06:08 PM

Well Tofu, see ya in a few months lol

I too got hooked on the 2005 + Doctor Who just last year, I avoided the show for YEARS but ended up getting hooked by mistake.

I found a "Movie" On Demand called "Torchwood Miracle Day" It appeared to be a miniseries within 5 minutes of the first part I felt like I was missing A WHOLE LOT so I paused it hit google and found out soooo much more lol...

Torchwood was a spin off type show of Doctor Who, shares storylines and characters, and written / directed by the Doctor Who team as well, There was also another show created called "The Sarah Jane Adventures" Sarah was the companion of one of the doctors (Prior to the 2005 reboot if I remember correctly) You COULD skip the Sara show if you can't find it, I got my hands on those seasons thanks to my brother who has EVERYTHING Doctor related, but imho that show was made for kids and or young girls to get new Doctor Who fans.

If you want the FULL experience queue up Torchwood (and maybe Sara Jane) and watch everything in the following order:

Doctor Who Series 1
Doctor Who "Children in Need" special
Doctor Who "The Christmas Invasion" Christmas special
Doctor Who Series 2
Doctor Who "The Runaway Bride" Christmas special
Torchwood Series 1
Doctor Who Series 3
The Sarah Jane Adventures Series 1 (OPTIONAL)
Doctor Who "Time Crash" Children in Need special
Doctor Who "Voyage of the Damned" Christmas special
Torchwood Series 2
Doctor Who Series 4
The Sarah Jane Adventures Series 2 (OPTIONAL)
Doctor Who "The Next Doctor" Christmas special
Doctor Who "Planet of the Dead" Easter special
Torchwood Series 3 "Children of Earth" 5 July 6, 2009 July 10, 2009
Doctor Who "Dreamland" (animated) (OPTIONAL)
The Sarah Jane Adventures Series 3 (OPTIONAL)
Doctor Who "The Waters of Mars" November special
Doctor Who "The End of Time" Christmas/New Year's specials
Doctor Who Series 5
The Sarah Jane Adventures Series 4 (OPTIONAL)
Doctor Who "A Christmas Carol" Christmas special
Doctor Who Series 6 (WATCH THE FIRST 7 EPISODES ONLY)
Torchwood Series 4 "Torchwood: Miracle Day"
Doctor Who Series 6 (WATCH THE LAST 6 EPISODES)
The Sarah Jane Adventures Series 5 (OPTIONAL)
Doctor Who "The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe" Christmas special
Doctor Who Series 7 (WATCH FIRST 5 EPISODES ONLY)
Doctor Who "The Snowmen" Christmas Special
Doctor Who Series 7 (WATCH EPISODES 6 To CURRENT)

As for me, I've watched everything above as well as some stuff not listed, LOVED Eccleston's Doctor, he had JUST the right mix of dick and good guy for me then once they switch to Tennant I hated him at first cause he was not Eccleston but by the end of the 3rd episode I LOVED Tennant, Smith.... All these episodes in and I just can't bring myself to like him.

He's a good doctor don't get me wrong but he just doesn't hold a candle to the doctors that have come before him. my only hope is that they change Doctors soon, Tennant had a run of 49 episodes and Smith is sitting at 45 so with any luck we'll have a new doctor come the end of season 7 or the start of season 8.

Enjoy, deff a great franchise and all the shows are great (minus Sarah Jane, I just couldn't get into that one lmao)

Sarah_Jayne 04-12-2013 06:21 PM

Sara Jane was for the really young kids in that show but she is the ultimate in companions from all the Dr. Who seasons.

It is pretty much an open secret in my family that I was likely named partially after Sarah Jane Smith. My mom was/is a big Dr. Who fan and I was born in 1976. She dodges the question when I ask which makes it all the more clear to me. Her middle name is Sarah and my aunt is Jane but I am positive she put them together because of Sarah Jane Smith.

It is a good thing I get turned on by geeks because being a Sarah Ja(y)ne has attracted more than a few less than stellar pickup lines from them.

Actually, it's not a reboot, its a continuation of the original series.

Also don't bother with the last series of Torchwood (rearrange the letters ;) ), the one set in the US, it's really, REALLY bad, obviously trying to break into the American market and managed to drop everything good about Torchwood in the process!

Sarah_Jayne 04-12-2013 06:55 PM

I am not a Torchwood fan and I agree about the American one but Children of Earth was great. There was one part of that where I knew which friends were watching it because FB was full of 'wow, did they just go there' comments.

cybermike 04-12-2013 07:03 PM

I'll reword "Reboot" to "Restart" since 2005 was the first new season in 9 years, so it was sort of a reboot meaning they started the show back up, not the typical "lets redo everything" reboot.

and YES YES YES YES I totally agree the last season of Torchwood sucked balls, I could totally see the diff between the rest of the seasons and the last I wish to hell that season could have been done by the BBC and not been all "hollywooded up" lol

As for the rearrange the letters, WOW I never caught that before lol :thumbsup

The best Doctor Who was John Pertwee, I got into Doctor Who in those years.

The re-invention of Doctor Who in the 21st century was something that just had to happen, a good thing too - now the Doctor comes to us at a time where a number of things depicted in the original series as Sci Fi oddity are now actual reality!

TCLGirls 04-13-2013 12:05 AM

Love the Tom Baker Dr. Who episodes. However, I never really watched any of the other doctors.

If you pay attention, she has had a lesbian interest already in Who as well.

I liked Rory and how dedicated he was to Amy but he got the shaft a lot.
