And since you are a neuroscience nerd there is a ton of research already published about the epigenetic changes in the brain that leads to behaviour and mood disorders which comes from years of emotional trauma, especially in childhood.

So there's now a loop created, emotional trauma ----> epigenetic brain damage/changes ----> "mental illness/disorder" ----> more emotional trauma from mental illness ----> more brain damage/changes ---> more diagnoses of disorders

This is becoming a popular bio-social model of several mental illnesses now.

And the most mind boggling part of epigenetics is that emotional trauma can be passed down to future generations.
