Another great idea hits the dirt.

People who think armed guards are the solution are relying on a man with a pistol winning a shootout with a kid with a semi-automatic rifle and a load of ammunition and possibly other arms.

for this plan to work you would need at least 10 men split in to groups, patrolling the school with assault rifles...

it would be the NRA-s wet dream, to get those kids nice and scared so that they become good customers when they grow up and they stock the fuck up on as many guns as possible...

then we would need armed guards on the street and at shopping malls and in theaters and basically anywhere...

I could support the idea of arming teachers etc in the short term as long as there was a plan to tackle the bigger picture.

So certainly in the short term make the schools safe as there is an immediate threat from a population that is armed to the teeth whatever their mental state - but in the long term you have to tackle the bigger picture. Stop crazy people from owning guns, stop teenagers from owning guns, put a huge tax on ammunition, ban automatic and semi automatic weapons, and generally remove the reliance on penis extensions in your society.

I am not sure that is the argument here though. Sure, some extremists will be saying that but MOST are just arguing against the ease of purchasing assault type weaponry. I don't think adding background checks for those kinds of weapons is too intrusive. Costly maybe, but if it can potentially limit these things from happening then I don't see a down side personally.

Why even pay a guy to be there if the wasn't equipped and, willing to protect? What was the school's point in paying for that? A 15 year old boy, who is hospitalized but will likely survive, got students into a classroom and, used his body as a shield behind the locked door. He didn't have a weapon or formal training. It wasn't his well paid job to do this. I can't help but have pity for the deputy, who had a pistol with 15 rounds in it, for cowarding out. He'll never be able to take that back. All of this said, it has been a whopping 19 years since Columbine. Why haven't precautions and, actions been taken to prevent this? The people of this country have allowed themselves to become so polarized they can't see clear to work this out. Pull 20 random strangers off the street and, put them in a room together - they'd be able to come up with a common sense solution. Put absurdly overpaid, do nothing politicians in office and, in 19 years - nothing.
