What do you pack in your carry on for long flight?

I have to fly back to the States on Sunday to help take care of my mom after a surgery she is having. Then, I am back over at the end of January for when my sister is due to have her first child. That is a lot of bored hours on a flight in my near future.

What do you normally pack in your carry on for long flights? I usually load up on magazines and something with music attached. The last few times I have a psp I am watching videos on. What do you have to have?

Serge Litehead 10-26-2009 04:59 AM

equipment, music and some book.. couple of shots and sleep through most of flight :)

ruth 10-26-2009 05:00 AM

My camera's usually in my carry on so that takes up a lot of space. Other than that my Ipod and Iphone; with movies; tv and music on, a laptop. Magazines are always good too.
Most recently I've taken to knitting or doing crotchet on flights. I made a scarf on a short hop just last week. I must be getting old! :>

Sarah_Jayne 10-26-2009 05:35 AM

Yeah..I usually have my camera and the like in my bag too. I don't really trust them being in the main luggage without something happening to them.

I bring my PSP with games (Ratchet & Clank, and soon, GranTurismo) and funny videos (Trailer Park Boys - 5 seasons worth); along with my Tempurpedic pillow and a set of ear plugs to lessen the noise...

Chris 10-26-2009 08:07 AM

trail mix and a book ... done

ToBad 10-26-2009 08:25 AM

I always pack with me a new pillow as hand luggage, which I can easily develop in flight. Nice to rest your head or arm. You become a lot more rested if you can rest or sleep comfortably. The pillow comes in handy if you're sleeping in hotels. There is nothing so disgusting as to drill down my face in the hotel's pillows, which are never washed.

nakeddutch 10-26-2009 08:29 AM

LAptop and lots of movies at least 3 at 2 hours
each that should see you through your flight

munki 10-26-2009 08:34 AM

Change of clothes, for when baggage services inevitably loses or mis-routes my luggage.

Honez 10-26-2009 08:46 AM

A book
Laptop and a DVD or two (in case I don't like the in flight movies)
MP3 player
Snacks such as beef jerky or trail mix
1 liter of water
Camera
Neck pillow and small blanket
Earphones
Hand sanitizer
Small bottle of body lotion and lip moisturizer
Wool socks in case my feet get cold (because I always kick my shoes off)
Benadryl to knock me out so I can sleep

Barefootsies 10-26-2009 08:59 AM

My carry on is actually a back pack.

In it is gossip or celebrity mags, my laptop, ipod, and dvd player. Plus my passport, and some other minor b.s.. So I normally read or sleep on the plane. But on those longer coast to coast flights I will watch a DVD if I must, or can't sleep.

:2 cents:

fuzebox 10-26-2009 09:09 AM

My netbook is good for 2 full movies, and then I have the PSP for backup (although I've passed all my games, so I entertain myself with either random GTA carnage, or trying to beat personal scores on Tony Hawk).

I always do that too. My mom made us do that on flights when we were kids on the chance our luggage was lost and I have always kept up the habbit.

potter 10-26-2009 09:40 AM

snacks + drinks + iphone + magazine

Octopus 10-26-2009 09:59 AM

music and some books

Helen 10-26-2009 10:05 AM

Face wipes, water, sweets, magazines, ipod, sleeping pills, change of clothes, body spray, toothbrush & toothpaste :)

Sid70 10-26-2009 10:06 AM

cash for sure

Adraco 10-26-2009 10:21 AM

Laptop, passport and credit cards. Never hurts having a few dollars and Euros in cash around too, might wanna buy something at some strange airport and for some reason they wont take cards.
Change of clothes is a must! Need to get by 48 hours without my luggage, in case it is lost. Or on transatlantic flights, it's always so nice to go to the lounge or airport hotel and have a shower after a long flight. Then it's just a city hopper in Europe or the US and you arrive fresh, har dto beat that!

Airport hotels (located inside the security area) or rental shower-rooms are available at for example Detroit airport, Amsterdam Shiphol, JFK and Minneapolis/ST Paul.

I've never traveled with the baby. I'm nervous about it.

Aside from the extra baggage (pun intended), it's actually much easier. They've got a special line for you at the TSA checks and you also get to board first.

Both my kids were on a plane within 3 months of their birth...and they've been great every time.

Peaches 10-26-2009 06:02 PM

Kindle
Ipod
Headphones
Various drugs :)

Sarah_Jayne 10-27-2009 06:02 AM

Kindles are only just about to become available in the UK. Not sure if I would use it enough but it is tempting.

Pretty much none of that is allowed these days unless you buy it after security. Bet those shops are raking it in these days.

You can take all of that on board can't you? If you are talking about liquids and pastes etc, you just need to have them in small quantities, 100ml each item, and in a clear 1l bag.

fatfoo 10-27-2009 07:12 AM

Clothes / music / books / something else to pass the time

My nintendo DS and/or Sony PSP and a book. Something to munch (preferably something stinky like cheese-snacks, so everyone around me will start to feel nauseous).

L-Pink 10-27-2009 07:25 AM

In the good old days .... a book and an 8-ball.

baddog 10-27-2009 07:27 AM

Most people that ride bikes know how/what to pack into small bags :thumbsup

A week before a ride to Memphis I gave a girl the nylon liner for a saddle bag telling her she can bring anything she wants as long as it fits inside. Over the next few days I watched as this huge pile of stuff on her couch next to the liner kept getting rearranged.

About an hour before we left I packed for her .... :1orglaugh

I've never had a problem - I always carry my toiletries on with in the approved clear zippie bag.

Scott McD 10-27-2009 08:57 AM

Usually i take my PSP, with about 3 games.

A magazine.

Sweets.

And some money.
