Who here still changes their own oil?

I use Amsoil 0w-40. I also put in a magnetic drain plug and a magnetic wrap around my oil filter. It works fantastic. Always go the extra mile with your oil and filter!

escorpio 08-08-2021 12:16 AM

Not me, the most valuable skill my father taught me is that you can pay people with valuable skills to do them.

When the oil is expensive, they often put in the cheap stuff and charge you for the synthetic

ReggieDurango 08-08-2021 04:18 AM

I drive all electric, no need for oil

CurrentlySober 08-08-2021 05:04 AM

i cunt a4d anything that uses oil, for me to be able to change the oil in... :(

But even my deep fat fryer that i cook all my food in, my nurses change that for me...

Evil Chris 08-09-2021 06:53 AM

I leave it to my mechanic.

Technically i should but when it comes to my car i'd put more faith in the mechanic i've known for years to do those jobs than myself...

King Mark 08-09-2021 07:23 AM

Personally, I quit.

When I was younger, broker and only owned one vehicle I did.

Now I own a fleet of roadside service vehicles and various personal vehicles in my household.

Fuck all that. Mechanic on the payroll keeps it all good.

Even if I got out of the roadside service industry and just kept personal vehicles, I ain't doing it no more. Jiffy lube got me.

Colmike9 08-09-2021 08:18 AM

...You just put an oil drain thing under the pan, unscrew the bold, smoke a bong while it's draining, unscrew the filter and screw in the new one, screw in the bolt, then fill it up with oil. It's the easiest car maintenance that you can do.
For the money you save, you can get a bag of weed for the whole week. (Or like a day if you're me..) :upsidedow

Alex BongaCash 08-09-2021 08:41 AM

Does magnetic wrap for oil filter really help?
BTW - magnetic oil plug is really good indicator if there are troubles with an engine, having that for 3 years and really satisfied!

fuzebox 08-09-2021 09:48 AM

I service our 4 cars myself. Did brake pads and a fluid flush yesterday to get ready for a track day this week.

To the "pay someone, use a mechanic" people... Fuck you, I enjoy it. I don't need to stare at my computer to make money, having hobbies like this keeps me from becoming a drug addict.

Doesn't help that all the good shops in my area have 4-6 week waiting lists.

_Richard_ 08-09-2021 09:51 AM

know how.. can't due to dealership etc

But are you going to send a sample of your oil to Blackstone Labs for an analysis :winkwink:

You can if you're creative enough. I couldn't put power steering fluid in my VW once because it was dealership only, but found a way to rig a pump bottle to do it. :upsidedow

Also, I thought I had to take my VW to a dealer to get an oil change before, but it was just a big plastic thing that I had to remove to get to the filter.

Rochard 08-09-2021 11:19 AM

I do not. For $40 a local car wash does it, replaces my air filter, and details my car. Can't beat that.

Yes, I cut one open and there were tiny particles on the filter housing. It traps the ferrous metal that fits through the filter. I’ll find a link to what I use.

I would too, but my oil is so expensive and no garage carries it. So I’d have to purchase my own and bring it there, and they still charge the same price. Also a good time to lube the chassis bushings and hit the ball joints with the grease gun.

Most mechanics are good, but none will treat your car the way you will. I learned that the hard way

Did that on my 500 mile oil change on my hellcat and my demon. It’s really the only way you can prove a manufacturing defect and not customer negligence

I’m with you there.

I'm disappointed in anyone who doesn't at least know how to change their own oil, tire, sparkplugs, or batterie.

Hey, I get defensive :) Every week someone tells me I should be paying someone else to do easy stuff, basically so my "valuable time" can be used to "work more".

ANAL PASTE 08-09-2021 06:12 PM

Classic cars only. New cars get too complex.

Unless it’s ford triton v8. Impossible to change plugs. They seize in the aluminum head and need to be helicoiled

Yea, the last cars that are workable are the dodge gen 3 hemis. I’m done with foreign jobbers.

I think this is what my husband does with his motorcycle when he has it serviced. Brings his own oil.

I've never changed the oil in my life, never will. I will leave that to the dealership.

I was a mechanic for years. I’ve some shady shit. Oil is the easiest way to screw someone

lock 08-11-2021 04:12 AM

I do as if i pay someone i find parts or accessories removed or swapped out.

zerovic 08-11-2021 01:45 PM

Well, even tho I love engines and fixing stuff, changing oil or break pads is not my world. I have a very good friend of mine who is available almost 24/7 and he does everything for me when necessary. It's about a Audi A6 3.0 TDI Quattro.

I take that back, I did change oil on my son's BMW 2 months ago. It wasn't bad at all. Oil filter was on top of the engine.

Coybh 08-11-2021 07:49 PM

Nope. I have a c63s, they designed the oil plug to be once use... so it has to be replaced everytime.

The naturally aspirated m3, I think mine was a 2011, was a pretty friendly car to work on. The recommend oil intervals are 10k miles. That’s insane.

brassmonkey 08-11-2021 09:23 PM

god you guys make it like oil changing is like climbing a mountain. i thought of a new idea to do this easy wow!

Well on a moped you mix the oil with the gas, Brass :0

jamezon 08-12-2021 10:25 AM

last 50.000 miles went thru with one filter and no oil change at all, love those japanese cars from early millenium, they never go broke, only my garagiste goes broke

I'm not sure about the 2021, but other 911s that I've seen have the drain plug right underneath in the back, so that part is easy. Then you open the hood and take off the fan housing and underneath one of the fans is the filter. Not too hard and you'll save a lot, dealerships charge like $500 for that. :upsidedow

Yeah its crazy how they make you remove the rear bumper to do anything.

To be fair though on my 997 most tasks are easier with the rear off as well.

adultchatpay 08-12-2021 03:38 PM

I never done it with my cars.
If out of warranty, what i usually do is buy all the materials needed, bring it to my favorite shop and they do all the hard work for me while I carefully watch them.

:1orglaugh:1orglaugh nice

hmm it seems you are right, issue is more scheduled maintenance versus doing it yourself

shake 08-14-2021 08:05 PM

I've actually started working on my own cars again after 20 years of just taking them to the dealer etc. I hate making appointments, waiting in line and shit, often having them fuck it up and taking it back again. Get a nice sense of accomplishment doing it yourself too. I just did an engine swap in my garage as well

At that point just buy some good ramps and a socket set and have at it. Give it a try
