Question for Web Developers!

We are having a new website made that is similar to Fansly/Onlyfans, the quote we got is around 6,000USD.

Does this seem reasonable? We have not done much web work before so I'm not sure if this is a good price so hoping to gather feedback from y'all.

Thanks!

It depends on who's developing it. I've seen some pretty good sites built for that price, and I've also been hired to fix terribly developed sites where the owner got ripped off by the previous dev. It can really swing either way depending on WHO you pick to develop it.

But by all means possible - don't outsource to India

6,000USD for a custom-made site from scratch like OF with all their features it's so so cheap. Anyway, there are CMS's that already do it for $200 or so

I can share our experience to help estimation.
We have built the software for those entrepreneurs looking to start their own onlyfans style service. Pretty much the same thing you are looking for. We have started working on the platform before COVID. It was about 3 years ago and spent about 18 months of team of 3 developers + 1 designer + manager.

I would estimate it about 80 man*months or about 10000-12000 man*hours. We built it from scratch based on scalable microservices optimized for usage in Kubernetis cloud. Our goal to make a software capable to handle high traffic, millions of users.

But getting things done could be in a different way. I know there is a Wordpress addon for $40 which could give you pretty much similar things. A single developer can install that addon, re-skin and change layout to make it the way you want within 1-2 month and you would have it based on Wordpress. The cost will be $40 + 1-2 months of work and it this point price is reasonable.

At my point of view it is a good choice to built MVP at low cost but get ready for higher investment and re-write your service in case you would get popular.

You can also try our platform, we offer free trial for 2 weeks where you can see admin backend, check it from creator side and customer end. After 2 weeks it costs just $10/month to continue your testing and setup (without payment system) this is the hosting fee only so you can play with your own independent copy of data and storage.

Unfortunately, I think the price range is way off here.
The fan platforms sites have some major work to be done in both back and frontend so I think 6k won't do a trick. That's my opinion.

I just made my own website similar to onlyfans / fansly, i could set you up for $2000 ready to go with something similar

The main question is scale, e.g. for a smaller site/MVP $6k seems to be reasonable.

If it's aiming at tens/hundreds of users a WP plugin or the $100-200 CMS options are usually enough with a smaller tier hosting plan.

From higher user brackets and just in general: you will run into bottlenecks, the site could literally collapse under higher pressure (e.g. a reddit link making hundreds of people jump on the site at the same time), you will run out of disk space, you might lose your whole database due to not backing it up, etc.. not to mention the services you need to handle e.g. DMCA/KYC/GDPR/etc...

You can prepare the project for scale relatively "cheaper", as someone mentioned e.g. with kubernetes (or just with simple containerization, using independent APIs distributed on different machines to avoid cpu/io hogging, etc), you can start the project out with load balancing, db sharding, etc in mind, worst case scenario you won't need to balance horizontally but the option will be there.

You could validate the idea relatively cheaply but to publish it for a wider audience (promoting, buying traffic, etc) I'd at least spend a couple thousand on a developer who'd make it semi-scalable.

For smaller scale to be honest it's a lot easier/cheaper to use an already made service for a monthly fee, obviously for high/competitive scale if you want to fully own it it could be easily in the 6 figures.

I don't think it makes sense to create an alternative to onlyfans but this price seems ideal.

The rate is ok but you're getting a finished product for it, the question is what do they want for maintenance and further development/features, bug fixing, etc? I think maybe it'd make more sense to start with something pre-developed like x10revenue and then invest what you have left over from the 6k into marketing it.
