why the russians will dominate

A must see documentary
Thieves by law

The Russian Mafia: what can't they do? After this insider's look into the world of, ahem, "hypothetical" crimes, it's pretty clear that the answer is nyet. Following the stories of three mafiosi-cum-businessmen, Thieves By Law paints a fascinating tableau of men that would make Tony Soprano cringe. Most intriguing, though, are their personal histories interwoven with the evolution of the Russian Mafia itself. Beginning in Stalin's gulags and slowly transforming into an international organization, the mafia and Code of Thieves have always directly correlated to the political struggles of the Soviet Union?reflecting society back to the government like a funhouse mirror.

These men have been through bad times as well as good, persevering with the ammunition of street smarts, savvy, and loyalty to their code, and eventually transforming themselves from cunning crooks to shrewd businessmen. Through unprecedented access and a knack for asking all the right questions, director Alexander Gentelev shows us exactly what happens when a dark underbelly is flipped on its back: It slaps on some sunscreen, orders a Molotov cocktail, and soaks up those French Riviera rays?.

As a Russian, I fully endorse this thread, and if you don't vote for me for Miss GFY, just think what might happen to you!

Rochard 12-03-2010 05:49 PM

The Mafia got their asses handed to them here in the US so I don't fear the Russian Mafia.

Besides, don't you have to be Italian to be in the mafia?

No. The term may be first used for Italian gangs, but its not exclusive for italians only.

The Italians are the original gangsters that set the ground work for other ethnic groups. (excluding Asians)

I doubt the video is real, since they don't usually want people to know them.

DaddyHalbucks 12-04-2010 12:17 AM

The most ruthless mafia in the world is the Russian mob.

It is not to mess with the Russian Business Network, otherwise known as the RBN, otherwise known as The Русская мафия (Russian Mafiya).

oh wait

It doesn't exist. Interpol told me so!

In December 2009, Timur Lakhonin, the head of the Russian National Central Bureau of Interpol, stated: "Certainly, there is crime involving our former compatriots abroad, but there is no data suggesting that an organized structure of criminal groups comprising former Russians exists abroad".[6]

Little Odessa, anyone?

Mafia is Mafia and it doesn't matter Russian, English, Italian get every country in the world and you get their mafia, well except Us there is every kind of it :D

Linguist 12-04-2010 04:30 PM

grumpy... that's not why russians will dominate. That's why the country has always been in shit (since the start of history), is in shit and will be in shit.

And I'm saying that with being born in the USSR.

The group referred to above (no i didn't watch the video) are called Vore v Zkone. Thieves in Law (not thieves "by" law). They are a relic from the past, specifically from the prison system and gulags of Stalin. They are the closest thing in Russia to a structured mafia system and they are nothing today but a faint shadow of what they were. They are obligated to spend the majority of thier lives in prison and their strict codes of no drugs, don't fuck with families, don't own money or property etc etc etc was put to bed by constant fighting with other Russian criminal groups that came up in the 90s who just didn't give a fuck about anyone or their rules. Apart from Vore V Zkone, there is no structured mafia network in Russia comparable to the Italian concept of Locosa Nostra or "Mafia" as people imagine it to be. Russia has, since the dissolution of the Soviet Union been nothing but vast numbers of criminal gangs who continually rose and fell from whatever power they had leveraging whatever power or connections they had, while they had them. Further, criminal gangs are tightly interwoven into government and every aspect of commerce/business/finance and it is almost impossible to distinguish who is the good guy or bad guy when the entire system relies on corruption and connection, not law and the justice system. On top of everything else, Yeltin's attack on the KGB, his fragmenting the organization, cutting their funding etc as the result of the failed coup attempt resulted in the KGB itself getting into business to make its own money and most commonly is one of the primary players in security businesses for business (not simply extorting protection money, but also providing legit security) as well as all kinds of other enterprises and there is a strong case to be made that the KGB is the only actual true "mafia" in contemporary Russia.

Picking up a gun and killing someone to take their money or getting a small group of people together to do the same does not make one "mafia". Neither do prison tats, gold chains or a shitty attitude.

BTW... one of the main Vore v Zkone is probably still in prison in the US - Japonchik.

Thank you very much for your highly enlightening reply! I will admit that my only real contac I have had with so called Russian Mafia types was a few years ago, when a journalist friend exposed things concerning the takeover of the McCormick Distillery in Weston, Missouri by so-called "Russian Mafia" types, which investigation culminated in many prosecutions and large fines levied against the distillery for alcohol tax evasion.

I am very interested in documenting the activities of he USA based Russian crminals and your post has given me several directions in which to go.

Again, thank you for your reply and your reply is the kind of reply of which many more are needed here on GFY!

Kudos to you!

Thanks again.

Sally Rand.

The Mafia (also known as Cosa Nostra) is a criminal syndicate that emerged in the mid 19th century Sicily.

Eastern culture is very very different from western culture. You can't just take a communist system and flip it to caplitalism and expect business culture to easily assimilate. There is alot of shit going on over there right now, and has been for some time. The class divide and the crime seem pretty out of control and that's always a bad combo. I think if anything having a strong mafia / costa nostra over there would improve things, because that's not what they have now. Organized crime can in some ways be a blessing- it keeps small bands of disorganized theives and random thugs away from your business and away from your family.
