Is it over for affiliates? IE9 offering "tracking protection"!!

Microsoft's next-generation Web browser will see a release candidate "early next year," and it will include a unique, just announced privacy protection called Tracking Protection. Ad Block Pro and "Tracking Protection" = less sales

moeloubani 12-07-2010 05:05 PM

plz link to 'private mode in ie8' thread where everyone says this is the end for affiliates

point is that cookies help people as they go from site to site, not hurt them

u-Bob 12-07-2010 05:19 PM

affiliate programs could simply carry the ref id over in the links on their sites... problem solved

... would have to adapt. Why they haven't - years ago - is beyond me. Only tracking by cookies means no where near 100% of sales are tracked.

yeah, affiliate programs should not be relying exclusively on cookies in the first place or the ref code being carried from page to page in the URL. The initial hit should be logged and then when a user joins the site the site should see if there is a match in the database for the same user.

problems on the way

IP tracking still works.

If the user doesn't supply an IP address then I don't think they can't
even get sent the webpage.

ya really. the paranoid OP obviously doesn't know how affiliate tracking works. CCBill offers several ways to track - configurable in the affiliate program setup. IP is default.

Speaking about cookies,96% of my surfers have cookies enabled so i guess most of people dont care about that functions.

HomerSimpson 12-07-2010 08:00 PM

CCBIll uses cookie + IP tracking so I guess there will be no problems...

CashGordon 12-07-2010 08:11 PM

You shall check your sponsors if they track IP + cookie, than you shall have no problems.

BlackCrayon 12-07-2010 08:18 PM

The tracking method can not be selected by the affiliate, right?

No problems, even hard linked custom domains can be setup and properly tracked...
Nothing to worry about
