Is Tag Heuer a good watch?

I am currently looking at a Grand Carrera and was wondering who had experience with a Tag or know if it was a good watch that retained value.

For purposes of keeping time, no better than a $10 Mickey Mouse watch but if you're into bling, buy a Tag Heuer

ruff 12-26-2010 09:25 AM

Tag is a great watch. I've had one since 1980. Understated and not too blingy. It will retain it's value.

Black All Through 12-26-2010 09:28 AM

I have the Tag Heuer SLR I got it pre-owned for $1,400. It's the best watch of my collection.

fris 12-26-2010 09:29 AM

Watches have been purely for decoration for years now.

CurrentlySober 12-26-2010 10:25 AM

Provided it works it is a good watch, but if it is broken, it is only a good watch twice a day...

HTH

djroof 12-26-2010 10:30 AM

Constantin try ;)

OneHungLo 12-26-2010 03:19 PM

I bought one for $3500 and the thing fell apart on me. I constantly was sending it back to Tag to get repaired until the warranty expired, then they wanted $600 dollars to fix the same problem they were fixing for the last 3 years.

I'll never buy one again. Beware.

Cash 12-26-2010 03:26 PM

Yes, it's a great watch, I have one for many years now and it's excellent, just buy from an authorized dealer or a trusted company.
Tag Heuer :thumbsup

madawgz 12-26-2010 03:44 PM

im happy with my tag :thumbsup

I believe Cal. 8 is built on ETA movement (ETA 2894-2). You can get watches built on 2894-2 for much, much less (a few hundred dollars).

Many, many watches use the 2894-2 movement, which makes that watch not so unique. But if it breaks it is cheap to replace the watch movement.

I bought a gold rolex in egypt of a lucky lucky man for 3 quid and it hasn't lost a second.

fris 12-26-2010 05:13 PM

the rolex i saw in a golf magazine i wanted, but then I looked up the price, it was $30,000

SallyRand 12-26-2010 06:01 PM

I collect old watches but wear this new one:

Less than $200 USD and will last a lifetime.

Remember, watches are jewelry and are extremely POOR financial investments. Only in rare cases would you EVER recover your initial investment in a sale.

What makes you think he was lucky for selling it to you for 3 quid?

DimeCash 12-26-2010 07:31 PM

Good watch for keeping time and style - yes..
Good watch for keeping value no - not really

Rolex, Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe, Hublot, Jaeger-LeCoultre keep their value a lot better..

Spudstr 12-26-2010 10:22 PM

I have a tag automatic, looked around for a tag i liked for about two years settled on one while on vacation and could not be happier.

blonda80 12-26-2010 11:34 PM

I have one since few years and I never had problems with it.

NETbilling 12-26-2010 11:36 PM

I have a Tag, a Rolex and a Breitling. I like all 3 but the Tag seems to be made cheaper than the other 2.

NETbilling 12-26-2010 11:37 PM

I also have a Casio calculator watch that Moe from Xbiz sent me :-)

No, it's a diving watch fitted with a flexible clasp-type band instead of the standard waterproof rubber band which is issued at the factory.

The Seiko Diver only comes in one flavor.

RadicalSights 12-27-2010 05:11 AM

Just buy a fake Rolex and pretend you're rich. No one will ever know...

Now that is a watch, brings back many happy memories - then reminds me of the bitch who kept it when she dumped me.

Liking the Tag you have picked out, but you've missed the point about retaining value - you buy a nice watch because it DOESN'T retain value. It's 100% needless and mostly wasted spending - but get the right one and it'll make you happy every time you check the time.

At the time I owned the Seiko divers, it was the most I could afford but was exactly what I wanted so I loved it. Moved on to an Omega Seamaster (wearing it today cause its the most comfortable to wear) then moved on again to Rolex Sea Dweller (I don't like the magnifiers - its the divers watch without it) - Next on the list? Something from IWC.

There is only one item of jewellery a guy can wear and it's a watch, so you might as well make a statement.

pornguy 12-27-2010 06:52 AM

I have now had 2 of them and wont ever buy another one. First one. Bezel broke, started losing time they said it needed to be cleaned and serviced. 250$ later and 2 weeks I get it back 36 hours later its losing time again. They cant fix the bezel as its no longer one thats made..

Second watch. battery dies 1 year after I buy it. Take it in 75$ for a new one and needs service for general cleaning. Total 250 again and I get it back. 6 months later locking crown breaks and wont tighten. 375 for that. get it back and battery dies again. Take it in they replace batter free. get it back to to set date and the entire face moves when you pull the crown to the set position.

Altwebdesign 12-27-2010 07:29 AM

great watches!!
I'm a fan as they sponsor the mclaren formula 1 team, great watches, make a great statement, it's almost as though telling the time is an after-thought!

From about $300 wholesale up (depending on how many units you buy at once). Well, to put it simple: some can deliver better accuracy, more beats per hour, higher wear resistance on the wheel train, can run longer without having to wind it up or wear it on your wrist and so on...

Davy 12-27-2010 08:39 AM

I wish I could afford a TAG Heuer. :(

czarina 12-27-2010 08:41 AM

buy a Rolex

Zayne E. 12-27-2010 08:58 AM

I've had a Links Chrono since 2000...I love the thing.

Yes, a watch for the clueless layman. Rolex is overrated, mass produced and over-priced. :2 cents:

Get a Franck Muller instead. :thumbsup

sweetcuties 12-27-2010 09:14 AM

So what movements do they have? Maybe some unique-special built? I mean what should justify high price of a watch (speaking in general, not only about F Muler)?

They are unique mechanical masterpieces with everything made in house. Good craftsmanship justifies a high price.

fuzebox 12-27-2010 10:50 AM

TAGs are the best watch in their price range. I love mine :thumbsup

Apples and oranges dude, you can't compare a $3k watch to a $20k one.

I saw some amazing tags this year while I was out shopping. Great looking watches!

TAG's are great watches, had my SE/L for 10 years, just got a Link to replace it. They make great watches for the money imo.

Did you read the thread?
You can buy watches of the SAME quality (Same movement taking that movement is the core part of any watch) for way less.

SallyRand 12-27-2010 03:00 PM

One of the best watches ever made:

TIMEX M9
BLACK MILITARY STYLE WATCH, FEATURES REGULAR AND 24 HOUR MARKERS, BLACK NYLON BAND. WATER RESISTANT.
