Why Chinese Mothers are Superior

A lot of people wonder how Chinese parents raise such stereotypically successful kids. They wonder what these parents do to produce so many math whizzes and music prodigies, what it's like inside the family, and whether they could do it too. Well, I can tell them, because I've done it. Here are some things my daughters, Sophia and Louisa, were never allowed to do:

? attend a sleepover

? have a playdate

? be in a school play

? complain about not being in a school play

? watch TV or play computer games

? choose their own extracurricular activities

? get any grade less than an A

? not be the No. 1 student in every subject except gym and drama

? play any instrument other than the piano or violin

? not play the piano or violin.
The problem with being overtly strict is that the kids might eventually rebel and wild out later on in life.

Actually, if rebellion occurs later on in life, it means that the child never grasped or appreciated the concept of discipline and practice, as well as the obvious benefits and advantages that would occur from such practices...

that article is lame... making your kid learn the violin and piano will make them good people? she almost sounds racist, lol

A child that is trained to play a classical music instrument or speak a foreign language is generally more successful and more disciplined as an adult.

There might also be a class-based self-selection process here. Many of the subjects already come from middle class backgrounds.

That recipe sounds like a disaster, I think she just got lucky in the DNA game.

BlackCrayon 01-09-2011 06:56 AM

i'd rather my kid enjoy life than grow up an joyless robot.

If you've already made the effort to emigrate then you are more likely to be trying to manufacture successful children. Plus there's a pool of 1.3billion people to pick from and all the thick ones go nowhere.

"They wonder what these parents do to produce so many math whizzes and music prodigies,"

I saw a documentary recently that showed these young kids, probably no older than 6, doing some pretty amazing mental arithmetic.

The teacher would read out the sum and the instant he finished talking, all the kids hands shot up with the answer.

I don't think they mentioned a name for it. I think it was about getting them to visualise the abacus in their head.

Yeah that mode of parenting worked wonders for Mao parents. He was quite the achiever.

moeloubani 01-09-2011 12:25 PM

your kids will thank you later in life when they realize you didnt let them waste the time they had when they were learning the most on tv, computer games and stuff that won't matter the minute it's over

no one needed tv or computer games 100 years ago when stuff like that wasnt around

fun doesn't have to be non productive time wasting

Doctor Dre 01-09-2011 07:01 PM

One thing for sure, my kids will be limited to 1h of TV and video games a day, and it will be after everything else is done.

It depends. If the parent is genuinely very strong and controlling, the teenager will still never want to fuck with them. But if you are some ex-hippie parent who decided to raise your kids in a strict way, the kids will fucking own you when they become teenagers.

I would suggest always being true to yourself. Kids know if you're being genuine or not. My parents let me run free. I made mistakes, but I hated doing anything that would disappoint them. They didn't yell and scream when the police brought me home in the back of the police car, but I felt very guilty. Not scared, guilty.

I'm far more straight laced than the rest of my family today. I'm quite a square.
