What is the first thing to make you leave a website?

For me if the site is slow or has too much junk on it I bail.

What makes you leave a site just because of the design or function?

Crappy Design / Link Farms

Tom_PM 01-21-2011 11:28 AM

Yep, too slow. Ugly cluttered backgrounds. Terrible non-contrasting text colors where they expect people to read. Crap like that.

Roald 01-21-2011 11:29 AM

Slow websites

xenigo 01-21-2011 11:30 AM

I usually leave when I get that notification from Avast that a trojan is being installed... Really ruins an otherwise great experience.

LeRoy 01-21-2011 11:32 AM

If there's a ton of ugly girls. I'm out

also if it's slow. C ya

loud music or videos that auto play... I have webmasters coming to me from time to time with 'ratio issues' sometimes and i'll load up their site and they have some hardcore shit playing loud in the background or live cam models doing shout outs at full volume. I picture people surfing our sites at night, maybe listening to a bit of music, checking out some porn while they listen discretely to some Phil Collins.. then BLAM! loud screaming and groaning waking up the whole house hold... click and close ;)

People like control when they are surfing, give them that and they will stay for a bit!

...yeah loading slow and banner farms are bad too.

Forgot about that, any videos that have auto load or music and I'm gone almost every time.

There should be laws against this lol.

link farms/trojans and ugly women.

TisMe 01-21-2011 01:14 PM

Music starts and I'm gone instantly.

TeenSluts 01-21-2011 01:14 PM

Music usually

TeenSluts 01-21-2011 01:14 PM

Flash banners with rollover sounds , ex. Gfy a few years ago

spazlabz 01-21-2011 01:17 PM

a lot of good reasons listed here

my biggest pet peeve with site would have to be the light colored text on a light colored background! I mean SHIT a person with perfect eyesight would have problems with those, my eyes suck and it gives me an instant headache

Black All Through 01-21-2011 01:21 PM

Anything misleading: thumbs, fake video players, videos below the fold, popunders....

ottopottomouse 01-21-2011 01:26 PM

Autoplay music.
Slow loading.
Overcomplicated flash.

izzynew 01-21-2011 01:28 PM

Slow loading. And if it's really slow I click the red 'x' before it even finishes opening.
If the index page is that slow, what's the point in hanging around and trying to open other pages?

V_RocKs 01-21-2011 01:29 PM

Clicking something that doesn't work. Especially if they are selling me something.

If it's some site I know has been around a bit, I'll do a "Clean Computer" and keep going.

These

DWB 01-21-2011 03:19 PM

Slow... auto sound... pop-ups...

Zyber 01-21-2011 03:22 PM

It usually helps if the website has a link you can click on - makes it much easier to leave!

czarina 01-21-2011 03:23 PM

slow load time

d-null 01-21-2011 04:18 PM

a pop over with a CPA ad on it causes me to curse the webmaster and hope their whole network comes crashing down and sandboxed for life :2 cents:

TheDoc 01-21-2011 04:26 PM

If the site does not have what I'm looking for I leave... otherwise I always stay.

loreen 01-21-2011 04:27 PM

If I don't see what I'm looking for at first glance.
Also small alexa rank if I'm looking to buy something.

Small alexa rank, that's interesting. Never would of thought of that. I do a google search for the name and expect atleast 10k results.

Some Guy 01-21-2011 05:27 PM

I have the attention span of a gnat. If a site takes more than a few seconds to load... I'm out. Auto-playing music also makes me run for the hills. I also hit the road if a site looks like it was designed by a five-year-old (comic sans) or is too cluttered.

In summation: I only like sites that don't annoy me.

blackmonsters 01-21-2011 05:42 PM

I will turn my sound down.
I will tolerate red text on blue background....(if 3 advils are available)

But a pop up????

or alert box???

I close the site immediately and never go back.

I dumped a sponsor I had been using for years after they decided to put
an alert box on a non-console link.

Someone mentioned that surfers like control.
To me, a pop up/alert is the ultimate in non-control.

BlackCrayon 01-21-2011 05:50 PM

auto music/video

Ayla_SquareTurtle 01-21-2011 06:09 PM

1. autoplay music/video
2. popups/unders or any related BS
3. blinking things
4. bad text on bad backgrounds
5. any unusual code that forces things to happen, ie, forces all links to open in new window

frankie_gunn 01-21-2011 06:42 PM

Not finding what i was looking for.

deadbabes 01-21-2011 06:47 PM

Great question! For me, it's seizure inducing banners-and slow loading.

u-Bob 01-21-2011 07:17 PM

*music. (music or videos that autoplay = closed tab)
*flashy backgrounds.
*sloooooooooow sites.
*css mistakes... (like namecheap's new crappy design).
*sites that are hard to navigate. (remember if a webmaster has trouble finding something on your site, you can forget about a surfer finding it).

Zorgman 01-21-2011 07:29 PM

- Too slow
- Same color text on background (black on black etc).

potter 01-21-2011 08:10 PM

if it's flash

those ads that take up all of the screen

music

slower than shit

bad UI and i can't even figure out wtf i'm supposed to do

or bad UI where i can't find the information i need in <2 clicks

Barry-xlovecam 01-21-2011 08:19 PM

Lots of thumbs set up to skim traffic ...

C H R I S 01-21-2011 08:20 PM

Slow and tons of ads.... I am amazed at how many ads someone can put on their site and think its tolerable.

closer 01-21-2011 08:23 PM

Any website that does not do / offer what you expect from it = close tab

- audio
- non-essential javascripts ("do you really want to leave?")
- wrong design choices
- sherlock holmes UI
- load time
- blind links
- banner / link farms
- having to logon multiple times / short session times
- DHTML ads you need to click away before you can see the content
- sites that want my underwear size before I can get to view something

webair 01-21-2011 08:31 PM

POPO UP

or music

Spunky 01-21-2011 08:38 PM
