People from NYC, help me decide.
Whats a better place to stay on upper east side, 77th or 92th street? Isn't the 92th too far from everything? There is a simpler condo on the 77th to rent and a better one with many amedities in the building on the 92th. What to choose?

77th but depends. Its still far from alot of things. You probably want 50th and below

When living in manhattan in this new millenium, keep this general thought in mind: The lower the street numbers = the safer the neighborhood... Unless you hit the lower east side, then it's dangerous again. :2 cents: And what the hell does "too far from everything" mean in nyc? Never heard such a thing. :pimp |
77th...unless your "hood"

Go to SoHo, near Washington Square Park, so cool there.

What size places are you looking at and what is rent going for these days?
I miss being in the city. And as already pointed out, in Manhattan nothing is really ever "too far". |

how long are you planning on being there?

I'd pick the 77th one. As far as distance... 20 blocks isnt going to make much of a difference but at least its a safer neighborhood.
There isnt anything that interesting in terms of night life and food above the 50s anyway. |

Have you been to the L.E.S. in the past 5 years? It actually safer than in the 30s now with all the boutique hotels and shops. Back before 99 it was sketch, now it's a way different vibe. Actually I think its a bit to safe and cutesy for my taste anymore. But they do have some of the best places to eat... WD-50...etc |

Thats the crazy thing about NYC... every area changes for the better every 2-3 years. Look at Brooklyn and what has happened there in the last 10 Years.

But it feels like the Bronx has been making a turn for the worse. All these harlem rejects moved here and are competing with the natives for turf. They're all being stuffed into these giant cheeply built low income buildings with a million tiny apartments in them. They're kinda like mini housing projects lol. |
The projects on 92nd street are named "the John C Holmes Houses " lol and I think they are designated for the elderly. So you might have some 1930s G's living there. The whole city has been cleansed of the "bad element" from 130th and below. Stay at the best place below 125th street and pay the extra 3 dollars on your cab rides. This place is disney land compared to what it used to be.Even the bad parts are high end
Compared to the rest of the country ;) |
Oh yeah and as stated earlier stay out of the Bronx unless you dig 10 dollar aids infected hookers and heroin :)

Jennifer: "Hey Billy, lets go up to the Bronx Zoo and look around the neighborhood for a StarBucks" Billy: "No Jen, haven't you seen that 80 Blocks from Tifany's movie? Lets just go to the Zoo then come straight back to the hotel." Jennifer: "Silly Billy, The Bronx isn't like that anymore... NYC is the safest city in the country now!" Billy: "Oh OK, I want to see what a Venti Mocha Latte' Express from the Bronx tastes like anyway" Next thing you know Jenny was found floating down the east river and a year later Billy was spotted begging for change on the train to support his Hunts Point hooker habit. lol j/k |
Just moved to williamsburg myself, love it up here...there's hipster bitches everywhere!

I think some parts of NYC, like Central Brooklyn & East NY will always be rough. That's the nature of the city. |

But yes lots of hipster girls around for sure. We had to move our office out of there because it got way too pricy |
nothing is too far in NYC. Stay where you get the best amenities IMHO

77th st is the better choice
If you can afford it...................go midtown |
Midtown is all booked short-termish. About the amedities, the one on the 77th has zero, its just an apartment. The one on the 92th has a 24/7 front desk, pool, gym, children's playroom, etc. It is also bigger.

92nd isn't bad at all. Unless your name is Pete The Fly.
The only thing you should check is how far away it is from the train. 92nd could be more convenient than 77th. Hell, 125th is more convenient than 77th and York. Subway stop distance matters. |

I'd have no problem with 92nd. |
You can find a really nice 1br in midtown for your budget.

To the OP, you may want to consider looking into a place like Hoboken or Weehawken in NJ. They are right across the river and very close to various forms of mass transit right into midtown. |
