Any way to get the indentity of a file uploader?

In these shakedown lawsuits against torrent users the IP addresses are public so you can subpoena an ISP to get the name of the user who was assigned that IP.

any legal means to get the identity of a thief who keeps uploading your content to file sharing hosts day after day after day...............?

subpoena them for the IP address.

There are a few ways. If the "horse is already out of the stable," you can issue a court order to the filehosts asking for the user's information.

Or, you can watermark the files when they are downloaded from your servers. Then, it is fairly trivial to see who uploaded the file, because when you run the file through the watermark detector it will tell you which of your users uploaded it.

We (PornGuardian.com) offer such a watermarking system. You can email me at [email protected] if you are interested in more information.

Best,
Dominic

if you decide to do this spend the money and hire a good privacy lawyer for each country you sell to

canada for example has some strict privacy laws wiith fines of 10k per infringement.

for watermarking the file with a unique identifier that associates the download with a specific user account.

Good tool, but the uploader might not necessary be associated with the affiliate. These things get ripped and go viral. It happens.

Hey Mutt,

Yes.. we issue subpoenas all the time and get their accounts closed permanently (or at least until they open a new one). Shoot me an email and I'll let you know how to do it... for free. :)

Could still help shutdown a compromised account or get rid of the person who helped the viral along in the first place. We'll have something similar quite soon actually and something else that will rock the industry leaving them scratching their heads. :1orglaugh

Out of curiousity here, what happens when the file gets transcoded? Are you encoding a frame into the video itself? I assume not as that would require that you transcode the video on the fly as the user downloads. Lets say I go on a site, download a wmv (watermarked by your system), and upload it to a tube site that transcodes it to flv? Is the watermark still detectable?

don't some filehosts not record IP of uploaders and wipe logs daily so a subpoena wouldn't matter as they couldn't give up information that they don't have stored :2 cents:
