McDonalds no longer largest chain restaurant

It's official: the Subway sandwich chain has surpassed McDonald's Corp. (NYSE: MCD - News) as the world's largest restaurant chain, in terms of units.

At the end of last year, Subway had 33,749 restaurants worldwide, compared to McDonald's 32,737. The burger giant disclosed its year-end store count in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing late last month.

Now that is good news - if only we can stay away from the mayo on the buns!

thickcash_amo 03-07-2011 04:39 PM

wehateporn 03-07-2011 04:41 PM

Plain and simple, the franchise requirements to open a Subway are much lower than a McDonalds...

arock10 03-07-2011 04:59 PM

each subway is way smaller revenuewise then a mcdonalds though...

Deputy Chief Command 03-07-2011 05:00 PM

hmmm, Mc Donalds usually have bigger outlets .. some subway restaurants I have seen or 7 square feet or less..nothing I would really call a "restaurant" ... never seen McDonalds as small as you have subways .. wich makes it a lot easyier to get that many , me thinks

brassmonkey 03-07-2011 05:01 PM

subway sucks

seeandsee 03-07-2011 05:03 PM

anyway who cares, give me big ultra mega shit

Jakez 03-07-2011 05:07 PM

Lots of subways are inside gas stations too.

SGS 03-07-2011 05:15 PM

Both taste like utter fucking shit.

That's exactly what it is too.

I used to work at a Subway. Used to bonk my girlfriend on the prep table. Good times.

No doubt.

There's a Subway here locally for sale for under $150k. Good luck getting even a whiff of a McD's franchise for that amount.

Tim Horton's (which is run by Wendy's here in the States) is exploding, at least where I'm at. You can't drive 1 mile without running into one.

In highschool a friends mom owned the Subway in town. When we had nowhere else to party, she'd steal the keys and we'd all get wrecked in the back. I remember doinmg bong rips in the freezer... :1orglaugh

fatfoo 03-07-2011 05:42 PM

Congratulations, Subway, with surpassing McDonalds Company. The food tastes great. 33,749 restaurants is sure a lot of locations. Subway is sometimes confused with similar restaurants, such as Mr. Sub or A-Sandwich.

3 of the 4 of those that opened here are now closed. The one that's still open is in a mall...next to Subway.

Quiznos is good too. If you want toasted, definitely do quiznos. The toasted subs at Subway get hard and taste like shit.

L-Pink 03-07-2011 06:29 PM

I would rather own 1 McDonalds than 20 Subways ... and total sales probably reflect that as well.

tabasco 03-07-2011 06:29 PM

Really? I would never have guessed that. Pretty sure it's not the case in Australia... McDonalds are everywhere. I hate them both.

The three of those that opened up here in Windsor, all shut down within about 3 years.

They are not "healthy". They are "healthier" than fast food restaurants like McDonalds, about 10x healthier. Subway discloses the nutritional contents of all of their sandwiches, easy enough for people to compare that to McDonald's crap and see Subway is a lot better.

Subway might have the most locations, but that is mainly because they put them anywhere. They are mostly in strip malls, regular malls or gas stations, where as the vast majority of McDonald's are stand alone buildings. If McDonalds did it the "subway way" they would probably have 200K locations. Hell of a lot more cost to buy the land and build a stand alone building vs renting a location in a strip mall.

you gotta be kidding me - you must live in the middle of nowhere if you don't have at least one Italian mom and pop pizza/sandwich shop that makes a meatball sandwich that laughs at that Subway meatball sub

comparing a McDonalds restaurant to a Subway shop is ridiculous - a Subway franchise costs about $100K - McDonalds close to $1-2M depending on the size of the city and you need 25% of that upfront in cash, unencumbered cash - they don't want people who have to borrow or mortgage to put up $250-500K.

i just googled, that 25% increases to 40% if you want to build a brand new restaurant, 25% is for buying an existing restaurant.

i eat it because there literally was a Subway shop 300 yards from my front door but i'm not a Subway fan

tonyparra 03-07-2011 10:54 PM

fuck you haters i love working at subway its easy ass moneys!

Subway is the cheapest fast food Franchise to get into in North America. Your franchise fees are 1/3 that of McDonalds, as are the royalties paid. Another thing that leads to a lot of Subways are the population requirements. McDonalds won't even consider you if you're applying for a franchise in a town with a population of less than 10,000. Subway doesn't give a shit how backwoods you are as long as you turn up the cash. I know the guy who owns the local Subway franchise pretty well, we talk about it once in a while when I pop in to grab a coffee... :2 cents:

McDonald's
Total Investment: $118,375-$1,900,000
Initial Franchise Fee: $45,000
Royalty Fee: 12.5%+
Advertising Fee: N/A
Term of Agreement: 20 years
Renewal Fee: $45K

Subway
Total Investment: $78,600-$238,300
Initial Franchise Fee: $15,000
Royalty Fee: 8%
Advertising Fee: N/A
Term of Agreement: 20 years

I actually like Subway. However, I usually take a year off from it every 3-4 years.

LRS 03-07-2011 11:47 PM

subway is awesome.. just for the quick and run out on the street.. would not go to mc donalds or others

pamon 03-07-2011 11:58 PM

costs and overall revenues of a McD's definitely outweigh Subway. Average subway might pull in 3-5k daily? McD's pulls in much more than that + larger variety of menu + profit makers. A $5 subway has minimal profits but they make it up in volume.

CPA37710T 03-08-2011 12:05 AM

both are disgusting restaurants people, eat at home and be healthy!

Sausage 03-08-2011 12:11 AM

Not sure what type of subs you get over there, but here in Australia you can eat very well at subway. Just avoid the white bread, dont get the fatty fillings, and choose a healthier sauce. Of course if you are gonna get a meatball sub, double cheese on white bread it's no different than getting a burger from maccas.

Lonny 03-08-2011 12:25 AM

got food poising back in 2000 at a Sun Valley SW franchise never again.

Its really not the initial franchise fee or royalties but the total investment. McDonalds you have to buy land and build a nice big building. Subway you find a strip mall and you lease a space from them. I wonder what % of subway franchise owners own the land/builder vs subway franchise owners...

nikki99 03-08-2011 12:41 AM

fuck mcdonals makes people fat

I thought that mcdonalds owned the land on most of its stores and the franchise owner payed rent. Most of mcdonalds money comes from the land that they own.
