Its amazing that two kids with a search engine company can come along into a new market and knock a 36yr old industry giant out of first place.

Rochard 03-09-2011 09:59 AM

When the iPhone came out it was a game changer - it really was. It set the standard. But once everyone else caught up..... At this point all of the cell phones are the same now.

Not so amazing when you consider the latter's walled garden approach and anti-flash policy imo

adultzone 03-09-2011 10:10 AM

iPhone is still the best one.

bronco67 03-09-2011 10:10 AM

In Apple's defense(can't believe I'm saying that), Android has so many more phone and carrier options to choose from, so those numbers make sense.

Angry Jew Cat - Banned for Life 03-09-2011 10:11 AM

Wasn't long ago they had an article on TechCrunch talkigng about this. Android smartphones have made a sudden boom in the youth market. The teen crowd suddenly sees the Android devices as the hip new thing I guess. Nielson had put out their numbers and where all the other demographics had pretty much held steady, there was a huge boom in the 13-18 age range.

CPimp 03-09-2011 10:12 AM

beautiful. simply beautiful.

Ya, I'm gonna hold out until summer and see what else makes its way out, but the Desire looks pretty sick. Just have to make the decisions as to which is the lesser of two evils, Bell or Telus. I'll probablt go Telus. I really really hate Bell...

That's not a defense. That's Google's business model.

CamChameleon 03-09-2011 10:26 AM

lol this is just based on Tesco's sales... how big of a carrier are they again?? with a wide range of handsets for all budgets shouldn't be hard to ship/sell more handsets!

Dappz 03-09-2011 11:10 AM

they are both the both i have iphone4 and the htc android :)

sojproductions 03-09-2011 11:23 AM

there are many different androids so it doesn't mean anything... iphone still outsells each model.

Uhm yeah? That's kinda the idea behind Google's whole business model :1orglaugh Plus we're talking about Android vs iOS. "iPhone" isn't an OS :1orglaugh

ah. it seems as though i'm not the only one annoyed by the fact that people refer to owning an android phone as having, "a droid". :error :thumbsup :321GFY

ravo 03-09-2011 01:29 PM

I've used both Iphone and Android - as much as I hate to admit it, the IPhone is still more intuitive and easier to use.

And, as far as traffic numbers go, on our network, Iphone OS still out-numbers Android by about 30%.

Deej 03-09-2011 01:31 PM

Just picked one up myself...

After the headaches I went through with Bell over my air card, I really don't think they'll ever get my business again. But fuck, I hate Telus just about as badly, haha. Unfortunately I'll just have to settle with the lesser of the two evils, which I believe is Telus too.. :1orglaugh

Or alternatively, android phones are much cheaper, generally, so more affordable by that age range.

Anyway, point is, DUH! Of fucking course they sell more Android devices. There is one iphone, there are hundreds of android handsets.

But let's have another pointless thread with Android and Apple people calling each other cunts.

It's so sweet when people think Google is a search company.

It's always been an advertising company. Always will be.

NetHorse 03-10-2011 02:56 AM

I fail to see how this is remotely significant. How many different android phones are available on how many different carriers?

That's right, dozens.

How many different Apple smartphones are available?

1.

How many different carriers, 2, up until a month ago, 1.

drx 03-10-2011 03:05 AM

every month theres something new hard 2 keepup these days

Google is a data mining/analysis operation. Amass enough information and there is nothing you can't do. Advertising pays the bills in the mean time. :2 cents:

I have the HTC Desire ... amazing phone .. bought it unlocked , so using in Montreal on Fido ( 40.00 / month ... lol ) ... In the USA, I am using it now on T-Mobile...

candyflip 03-12-2011 07:12 PM

I actually said that this would be the case here on GFY a few years back. It's not that difficult of a feat really, considering there are many carriers and at least 50 different Android phones.

Until recently in the US, there was 1 (or 2 depending on how you look at it) iPhones and 1 carrier.

With regards to his pricing theory, you can buy an iPhone for $99. Only the shit Android phones no one wants cost under $100. That sorta nullifies that theory.

Anyhow...you'll get a kick out of this. I'm going back to school. It's all online and they're REQUIRING me to spend the money to buy one of the brand new Macbook Pros, and it's not really even discounted. How's that for some shit. :1orglaugh

Zorgman 03-12-2011 09:27 PM

Apple devices are for people that like consistency. Like people who only ever eat at McDonalds. 1 phone - everyone is the same.

Android devices are for people that don't like apple! Everyone is unique and ever changing.

cheekycherry 03-13-2011 12:41 AM

Have you used Android? Compared to IOS it sucks.

I read the WHOLE article ...

?The last quarter of 2010 clearly shows the trends for the coming years in Western Europe. The Western European mobile phone market will be dominated by smartphones, and Android will be the king of the hill, Android surged from 4% to 31% market share in less than a year to become the market leader in 4Q10 and the fastest growing operating system ever.?
This would strongly affect our mobile phone platform ? Flash v. JS. Thanks for the heads up :thumbsup

no variety of devices with iphone, no cheap devices. Say i dont need any fancy colored iphone screen , i'd go even with a b/w edition that would make battery last at least 4 days and price down to $50 a unit.

They have 2 models available for sale and one of them can be had for $99.

Unique in the fact that all android phones are different in some way. Either shape, size, screen res, buttons or touch, keypad or on screen. I didn't mean unique in software, I was talking about hardware.

AdultNex 03-13-2011 09:46 AM

android os > ios

seeandsee 03-13-2011 12:42 PM

Still iPhone have bigger value, still...

adultmobile 03-13-2011 05:56 PM

I was in biz of mobile games and apps before of iphone, from 2001 to 2004 I been doing java apps and it sucked because wap bills and each carrier to accept to put your apps in it, I mean 5 carrier per country so 100 store/markets to make contract with and collect rev share, this was suitable for gameloft and few big corporate only, it sucked for fragmentation.

Then it came Apple iphone with one itunes store. That's quite nazi but is no wap is no carriers fragmentation, simply you do an app and everyone in world can find, pay and download. So success of iphone is not because hardware or OS or design, but is only because it has a centralized app store and billing, and Apple brand of course.

Said so, Apple censors all what is adult apps, the nintendo emulators and all the geek and pervs shit which is what people really wants. Plus censors Flash because of politics, and so on. So have to "jailbreak" and hack the phone just to install console emulators or adult shit, and still you can't bill anyone for this, is just few hacks for few people, is not a biz.

Then what, Google do own market and phone, and there's adult apps, nsnes emulators and perv shit, what people wants. There's flash 10.2 (out this week, had 10.1 before) and I can see it in firefox, opera or other 3 browsers. This is not mobile browsing, this is like your notebook. Plus you can "root" android if you want do more stuff but this is not as needed as a jailbreak on iphone and anyway, there's rooted apps in market too.

At past month mobile world congress, most of the new phones announces was simply android based. There's a sony one like a console, an LG one with 3d display not needing glasses, several of those have nvidia gfx + dual core cpu ones.

I bring with me a Google Nexus S (with Google logo printed on it, people say oooooh when see it on a phone, more then seeing an apple, lately), and I have the old iphone on desk just in case, there's still 3 times more pay (quality) apps for iphone than on android, but is matter of a year to have more pay apps in google market.

BTW I made adult apps in 2003 and stopped soon after because people wants to see naked girls on big screens when sitting home. No small screens. Now is 8 years later and I don't see that boom of mobile adult yet, % of mobile biz over internet one I mean, is small. And with android phones (flash 10.2) I can use my cam site ChatGF without need of a "mobile version" really. Phone is more to chat than to see images or videos, so even video chat not that big biz as it seems, but text chat and dating doing well. Altough this is going to facebook, there you can hook local girls for free, isn't it. Facebook is the free tube of adult dating, imho, yet another opinion of mine.

So I would be surprised if this is not an unstoppable trend - next years we'll have double androids each year and stable to reducing iphone's, this is what seems until now. Also note that Nokia got $1billion from microsoft to put windows in their next phones, so they drop Symbian or own linux support, but unlikely "nokia-windows market" to be like itunes or google market for apps soon, as that's phones not pc's.

If we factored in other iOS products like the iPod then the numbers wouldn't even be close.

Would you like to qualify your statement again? Maybe with "Mobile Phone OS"?

And there are hundreds of shitty Chinese phones running various forks of Android all around the world that Google uses in their sales numbers.

T-Mobile currently has 10 Android phones for under $100. (many of which are Free)
AT&T has 7 Android phones for under $100 (many of which are Free)
Verizon has 10 Android phones for under $100 (many of which are Free)
Sprint has 4 Android phones for under $100 (one of which is free)

So thats 31 Free or really cheap Android phones available in the U.S. compared to 1 iPhone 3GS model.

Of course having cheaper phones and more options = more sales. Anybody who tries to deny that is blind.
