iPhone on the way out? Android market share continues to rock

It's been obvious for the past few quarters--Google is eating up the iPhone's smartphone market dominance. If it keeps up this trend, Apple might find itself in the same position it does in the computer space--an (influential but) secondary player.

The remaining question is: will Tablet dominance follow?

Apple's definitely a tech herald--they pioneer a market, then someone else dominates. :Oh crap

The study surveyed more than 30,000 U.S. mobile subscribers and found Samsung to be the top handset manufacturer overall with 24.9 percent market share. Google Android took the lead among smartphone platforms with 31.2 percent market share, after two short months in second place.

after using my Vibrant for 3 months I've come to dislike Android but it's clear that the masses are eating it up and iOS will be just as marginalized after a while as OSX. Android is the windows of the smart phone world

Agree on Apple. Also, Microsoft has failed in yet another market. I wouldn't count them out though. Not yet.

Android is in tons of shitty phones which gives it a larger presence, but i'll take quality over quantity which is what iphone delivers.

Yep. Similar arguments can be made for OSX--quality over mass adoption.

I was a huge iphone lover and still use two of them but the whole fight over flash has killed them. Apple needs to work it out or go home early.

Funny I have flash on my iphone

Here's what you should know.

My GF and I both have iPhones and they are the best phones we have ever had. Mine works perfectly, and the endless aps (even free ones) keep coming. In addition to using it as a phone I downloaded 2 other phones (skype and 8x8) to let me take full advantage of our voip system. Plus, Apple's support is second to none.

I also switched to an iMac and it works PERFECTLY. Fast, sleek and flawless. I DREAD having to use my PC, Shitty Windows OS, and dealing with the endless amount of viruses and malware and bullshit that I decided last week to chuck it and by another iMac for work. When it arrived yesterday, I plugged it in, turned it on, and was "at work" in minutes.

I'm sure Android phones are great and except for Flash missing from iPhones, Apple does everything exactly right. The Apple store in downtown Montreal easily has over 100 customers in it at any time. If you've never tried their products you shouldn't dismiss them outright otherwise you'll be the only one missing out on some great products.

I don't even use Flash on my desktop/laptop. Never mind when on the go. But then again I'm a developer/programmer who has long hated Flash and it's constant misuse...long before Apple did.

As far as the market share thing goes we are talking about 100's of phones on dozens of carriers, outselling one phone on a bunch of carriers. Not to mention the dozens of Chinese variants/forks of Android that are counted but in no way represent the true spirit of the OS.

And lastly...about the iPad. It owns 90% of the market. A market that it pretty much created. Let's face it tablets before the iPad there was no market for tablets really. The iPad is the Windows of the tablet world.

Agreed, I had an iphone for years, then got a Samsung Galaxy S loved it for about a month, now the apps crash all the time, phone freezes, I am going back to the iphone and probably back to the 3gs and not the iphone 4.

I was going to ask about that.

No flash games on Iphone, no tube sites with flv players either.

Advantage to a phone that can handle flash.

I love my iphone :)

After reading the post and replies about "market share" and "market dominance", I have some thoughts. With these kinds of technological products, greater sales would have to result from higher quality of the product. It's not so much about increasing advertising commercials with million dollar TV ads. Somehow, the product has to be in demand and of good enough quality. People are not going to buy a phone just because they see posters and advertisements everywhere on the streets, transportation, schools, TV, radio, magazines, etc. Some schools are arguing right now whether huge loads of advertising should be allowed in school halls as students walk by. With this kind of purchasing decision, it's about taking a look at all phone companies and comparing different phones. People will want to test a phone before they buy it.

I went from iphone 3gs to htc desire hd and love it, dont see what iphone had over it tbh.

easy tethering for on the go web on laptop as well from the htc, all the same apps i used before are on the android, it links much better with social networking sites which is great for me to keep in touch with friends.

definitely the best phone i've ever owned.

prefer my iphone

suesheboy 03-10-2011 05:07 AM

Love my Droid 2 global.

The ability to use back up batteries, remove and replace CF cards and flash were what got me away from the I phone and I am real happy (other than needing a 3rd party app to sync with outlook).

Would like to get and I pad 2 but the same issues may make me get a zoom.

I would prefer smartphone with WIN XP :)

seeandsee 03-10-2011 11:53 AM

iOS and iPHONE are just on 3 platfroms and androiz on zillion, and iOS still holding, they rock!

magicmike 03-10-2011 11:56 AM

I like my iphone 4 and i have skyfire for watching some flash video sites, but it would be nicer if it has flash support. Thats the only big thing missing. There are many websites that I can't access because of that on mobile.

bronco67 03-10-2011 12:12 PM

I love my Droid, but I know the iPhone is great, and there's room for all. You have to remind yourself that innovation doesn't come without competition.

{Psycho} 03-10-2011 01:42 PM

Apple will hit back soon :)
