No specific applications are named, but the letter highlights apps that "contain a database of DUI [driving under the influence] checkpoints updated in real-time" as well as one that sends out real-time alerts about the existence of these checkpoints.

"With more than 10,000 Americans dying in drunk-driving crashes every year, providing access to iPhone and iPad applications that alert users to DUI checkpoints is harmful to public safety," the group wrote. "We know that your company shares our desire to end the scourge of drunk driving and we therefore would ask you to remove these applications from your store."

The same letter was also sent to Google and Research in Motion to encourage those companies to remove similar apps from their application stores. Research in Motion has already agreed to remove applications offering data on DUI checkpoint locations.

While the letter itself does not specifically reference any iOS applications, a press release from Senator Schumer names Trapster and PhantomALERT as examples of free apps offering location information on such checkpoints.

In addition to real-time information on DUI checkpoints, many of the apps in question also offer information on speed traps, red light and speed cameras, accidents, and other traffic conditions, several of which have also been considered controversial, but the senators' letter focuses specifically on the DUI checkpoint functionality.

How could someone in their right mind be against these apps? They help us identify which routes have been sanitized of drunk drivers so that we might plot the safest possible path to our destination. These apps are for our safety, nothing more.

I hate drunk drivers. I think they should be beat to death on the side of the road.

But still, my response to the Senator's letter would have been simply, "I respectfully decline to grant your request."

There are lines that shouldnt be crossed. Telling a company how to run their business is one of them.

More scary is that people now thing "checkpoints" aren't a violation of your freedom. I hate drunk drivers. Throw em in jail for a long time when they're caught. But to just randomly stop people to check them to see if maybe they might have had too much to drink, that's a large problem in my book.

Do they do checkpoints in Canada? It might be time for me to move......and talk funny.

Yes of course there are DUI checkpoints in Canada.

It has been ruled that it is not a violation of any privacy rights. The same as it's not a violation for a Police Officer to stop and check your license or registration.

Are these senators stupid?

Every time there's a "wolf pack" here(which means: 8 extra guys on patrol JUST for drunk drivers + 2 check points), the local news always mentions it and the location of the check points.

And I've noticed that every other place I've ever traveled.

One one hand, drunk drivers are definitely a hazard to public safety.

On the other hand, drunk driving arrests and court imposed costs, fines and probationary requirements have become an industry in the United States.

So, while it is probably correct to remove the hazard of drunk drivers, the current practices leave a lot to be desired.

it's the same as having an app telling you where all the squad cars are in your neighbourhood... tell all the criminals if they are safe or not, brilliant idea..

Apps are supposed to be helpful, not harmful. I would bet that they take it down because of that.

im not sure what are the limits in the USA but in my country you dont need to be drunk to get fined and your license removed... just half beer will do it.. and if you cant operate your iphone with half beer on you then chances are you cant without either...

as someone else said, its a business and is nice advertising politics wise... the foolish masses just go with it because its bad talking against it.

Local news also always reports when there are seatbelt checkpoints in my area. IMHO they report on them so drivers can avoid delays by avoiding the checkpoint areas.
