How can I convert a .mov video to .wmv for free?
I looked online and everything I saw was software I have to buy. Or if its free it will put a big watermark on the video.
i only need to convert 1 video thats like 20 seconds. can I do it for free? |
Not sure if they will do the formats, but check out either Handbrake or MediaCoder (mediacoderhd), both are free.

WinFF is a GUI interface for FFMPEG. Once you learn a few simple command line entries, converting videos is pretty easy, and if you learn more advanced commands, it becomes even more useful. It is free for windows and linux users. WinFF

Clients wanted Window media 9 codecs. Looked and looked and came to the conclusion that i will have to break down and pay the $179 for the Pro WMV coder. I have a Mac too. Got it from the same guys who make flip for Mac. Quality and speed was there at least. |
windows movie maker / windows seven

MEncoder is better. |
for free? use Windows Movie Maker
|
Forget Windows Movie Maker. WMM will not read a QuickTime MOV file. You have to either first convert it to a format WMM will read (if you can do that you don't need WMM), or if it's a codec supported by WMM you can try extracting it from its Quicktime container.

Like i said, i had to deal with this and there were no free options that let me convert MOV into a WMV, Windows media 9 codec. Even Sorenson Squeeze does not do Windows Media 9. I had to buy the plug WMV coder plug in to make it do what I needed it to do. Compression is a whole field unto itself. There is are huge differences in video compressors. The quality and sizes that the different compressors put out are very different depending on the price for the programs. Free=poor quality output at a large file size Keep in mind when Hollywood compresses a movie for DVD or Blue ray, they use a 30K hardware and software combo compressor to compress their movie files. Why is that? Maybe they like spending the money? Why is compression important? You want the highest quality at the smallest file size. Bigger files=better quality, but at the expense of streaming capabilities and bandwidth. Thats why a quality compressor is so important. Having the highest quality at the lowest file size is can be important depending on what your goals are. Not trying to be a know it all, just trying to share some info, because I dealt with it when I was shooting a lot of 3D. The problem we had was this; We had 2 HD files staked on top of each other to start with. The higher the quality the better the 3D depth and POP. But the higher the quality the bigger the file sizes, the harder it is to stream. It is a constant game of giving something to get something. Thats when i got heavy into understanding compression. This is not something i read somewhere, this is something me and 3 people dealt with and worked on for a month 40+ hours a week to get the best combination of high streamable quality videos at a smaller file size. There is a difference and there is a shit load to know, depending on what you are trying to accomplish. Good luck:thumbsup |
www.dvdvideosoft.com has loads of different free converter products on it :)

There may or may not be free solutions for this on the PC side, but it's not impossible to do for free if you have the correct toolset. You'd need a DirectShow filter that can render H.264 files in a MOV container (one is included in the ffdshow codec set), and then connect it to Windows Media Encoder, which is/was free. (It's still free, but in a different version than what they used to have. I think you can probably find the old version for WinXP if you look hard enough.) The reason it works is that WME uses a plugin architecture, so as long as there's a DirectShow filter for MOV files, it'll work. There are a few such filters, and the one in ffdshow is pretty good. (Other software, like Windows Movie Maker, flat out rejects the file format because of design, even if there's a MOV filter installed on your system.) Apple still hates Microsoft, and Microsoft still hates Apple.) Not to say that any of this is worth it. You have to know what you're doing to install and use ffdshow, and WME is not an end-user product. Most of the video converters is software from China that basically leverages these two (plus other) freebie apps, and mashes it up with an interface. |
thank you for the information

SUPER or Freemake Video Converter :thumbsup
