Encountered a rare beauty

I went to the first cars and coffee of the season and one of the guys showed up with this.
In over 20 years of owning Porsche's and attending more car shows than I can remember it's the first time I've ever seen one. A few years ago I drove to Chicago to see Michael Jordans and it turned out that he had picked it back up from service the day before.
This is a 959 and it's probably the most desirable Porsche ever built. Interesting story behind the 959.. Bill Gates bought one when they first came out. For 13 years it sat in customs in Seattle. After years of lobbying, he finally convinced Bill Clinton to set up the Show & Display law which allowed him to finally drive it here.

The local fellow that owns this 959 spent 6 months over the fall and winter traveling Europe to finally locate this car in Belgium. It is immaculate.

He only had to do a bit of suspension updates. The rest is original

How many of those were made? They must be worth a small fortune.

They made 337 of them. When introduced the list was $225k but they actually cost Porsche about twice that to build them.

So I am assuming that if you can find one for sale today the price could be something straight out of the defense department.

It is a damn sexy car.

dyna mo 05-01-2011 03:34 PM

ahh, it was top gear

As far as cars go it's one of the few cars made in the last 30 years that will greatly appreciate in value.

One of my other friends has an F40 and we were all suggesting that they take them out for some *testing*. What's really amazing about the 959 is that it's 24 years old and It will beat my Lambo on every performance level even though my car has 56 more hp.

I bet your heart skipped a beat when you first saw it :winkwink:

My one and only 959 encounter happened back in 2007 at Rennsport in Daytona. I was just getting into exotic cars and photographing them and had very limited knowledge other than makes and models so as I walked around this amazing collection of porsches at Daytona
I was much more a photographer than a Porsche enthusiasts.

I had wandered over to this one section where a Porsche dealer had a selection of cars including a silver Carrera GT. It was my first time seeing one and I was all over it taking pictures. Off to the side and tucked out of the way under some stands off pit road was this red Porsche that wasn't on display.

I walked over and checked it out and recognized it as a 959 but that's only from playing it on Forza 2. I knew very little about the car and certainly didn't know how lucky I was to actually see one in person here in the US. I snapped a couple pics, none of the interior and walked away.

I've come to realize just how lucky I was and many I've talked to that were also there said they never saw it because it was tucked away. I've heard that it was Jerry Seinfelds and he was going to be there to drive it but last minute business kept him away.

I'm sure it was a thrill for you to finally get to see one in person especially after all that time. Rennsport will be at Laguna Seca this October and I'm going to do my best to be there and this time I'll be ready.

On a side note, it's good to see you posting as I've pretty much given up on posting car pics here.
If you email me at ' webmaster at julie-clarke dot com " I'll send you a car related link I think you'll be interested in.

Here's a shot I took of that rare US 959

It really did catch me offguard. Not something I ever expected to see at a small cars and coffee in Wisconsin. However, there is a small but real serious group of car guys here. The fellow that owns this 959 has a pair of BMW M1's an original 73' RS several 356's and a number of other cars.

I will drop you an email.
