Why do rich people like Land Rovers so much?

Are they any good? It seems like an odd status symbol? What gives?

Phoenix 05-11-2011 12:19 PM

they like paying more for things
including gas and repairs

KillerK 05-11-2011 12:21 PM

They like Range Rovers

not land rovers

CurrentlySober 05-11-2011 12:22 PM

Perhaps its because we can afford them? A bit like apple products?

They look hottt!

96ukssob 05-11-2011 12:34 PM

the land rover brand is widely used by british royalty. they are actually a pretty decent vehicle for off roading but 99% of people that own one will never do that.

there is a ton of technology put into the car and they have become the standard for luxury SUV's with the Range Rover

I could certainly afford on but I would be afraid to be seen in one. You are almost asking for the beat down driving one of those (just like owning an apple product).

cooldude7 05-11-2011 12:36 PM

its about class. and satisfaction.

You are absolutely correct, I would never use ours for offroading, but I like the fact that it will go anywhere in the winter without Mrs FUBAR getting stuck :winkwink:

BadMrFrostyCZ 05-11-2011 03:18 PM

For the same reason they like tweed jackets and inbreeding?

TheDoc 05-11-2011 03:23 PM

You don't really have to be rich to have a land rover...but to answer your question, they're mostly yuppies.

You can get a used one, just a few years old and they only cost about $10k, for a really nice one. They drop in value really fast... kinda shitty cars. But whatever floats a persons boat.

strobi 05-11-2011 03:36 PM

Are you sure you are talking about a land rover? Like in land rover defender? I'm sure you mean Range Rover :)

i meant in terms of the brand, that's the problem imo for rr, they lost their edge. it used to be THE luxury off-road vehicle with gobs of style, then went to stylistic shit. i like how the evoque signals their attempt to re-embrace style.

i like the looks of the Ranger Rover Sport
but very bad ratings on Land Rover in the USA, they're allegedly prone to defects and from what I've seen rank pretty low in terms of quality which is too bad

DVTimes 05-11-2011 05:18 PM

land rovers are driven by the royals (or at least used to be) and the posh types.

a lot of farmers drive them (in the uk)

also they are (or were) driven by the uk army.

they have a sort of status.

Currently all Landrovers and Range Rovers are made in Solihull and Halewood in the UK, and Jaguars at Castle Bromwich. The engines are built in Ford factories in Bridgend and Dagenham. Next time you want to know anything about the British car industry, hit me up yeah?

I use mine to haul my kids around. They love it.

People buy it because of this:

V_RocKs 05-11-2011 08:08 PM

Best to buy one used for about 5 years and then strip everything off of it and sell that stuff to recoup the cost of buying a more expensive used vehicle. Then you can take it offroading.

What a bunch of anti-american tripe. I don't think those guys have ever liked an American vehicle, even when they are amazing to drive. Why did they drive the Cadillac off the path at a 90 degree angle into a ditch at the base of a hill? And the Hummer just suddenly died? I used to drive through worse shit in my parent's crappy V6 blazer when I was a little kid.

Reminds me of when they drove the ZR1 Vette, they complained about how the GPS had McDonalds restaurants locations built in.

That's a toy.

The X5 M
For the real men. Blows the doors off even a supercharged range rover and Porsche cayenne... in so many ways. Looks better too imo.
