it could happen - there are a bunch of American teams whose owners want out and there are no buyers - Las Vegas and Kansas City supposedly want NHL teams, Vegas doesn't have a building yet. Atlanta almost for sure is headed to Winnipeg if the Manitoba government helps out which they should. Phoenix still has no buyer, the city of Glendale is for some crazy reason guaranteeing 25 million dollars for next year to cover the NHL's losses - so a year from now Phoenix could be looking for a new home. Florida Panthers are hopeless, nobody even knows they are still in the league, nobody goes to their games.

It's inevitable that the NHL puts another team in Southern Ontario, they should just do it now and get it over with. If New York has 3 NHL teams and they all survive then Southern Ontario which has more hockey fans than anywhere on the planet should have 2 - could support 3 easily but 2 is enough. The NHL has always worried about Buffalo when considering a 2nd team in Southern Ontario but Buffalo now has a billionaire owner who is passionate about the Sabres so there's not much reason anymore to worry about Buffalo.

and up in markham it only needs to pay to toronto...not buffalo

rumor has it they are going to be called the "markham mallards" at least to some leaked emails.

It's quite possible that a new arena and new team will be added. Toronto city keeps expanding. More buildings and constructions are being built right now in the GTA. Toronto will sure have more buildings in the future.

That would mean Ballsilly would be tapped as an Owner, but Bettman seems to have an agenda against him specifically. Also if it were up to Bettmen, which to a point it is, Canada would get no further teams and could easily snowball the Winnipeg deal.

So habs fans have more teams to poke jabs at to make them feel better about themselves and their failure of a team :upsidedow

Balsile pissed off Bettman and most of the NHL owners by thinking he could push his way into the most prime hockey market through a backdoor - there are plenty of people who would pony up as much cash as Balsile for a new team in Southern Ontario.

Winnipeg is definitely getting a team even if Bettman doesn't really want it - he can't have the NHL having to take over another team like it's done with Phoenix. There are American owners who are ready to just walk away from their franchises like Atlanta.
