Projector -vs- TV
 

I've been thinking about getting a projector/screen setup. Anybody have experience with those? I have a 65" TV that I dearly love but sometimes I think it would be cool to watch movies on a bigger screen.

We shot at a mansion up in the Hollywood Hills a few weeks ago that had a huge screen w/projector and I just imagined how awesome that setup would be when watching movies. Any advice???

I had a projector a number of years ago and hated it. Unless you want the room always dark you lose the reason you got it in the first place.

Just the opposite for me , I love mine havent got a TV just the projector hooked up to my cable box ..love watching movies ,the screen projection size covers my main lounge wall..its something crazy..

Only downside I have found is that as you mentioned its best performance is in the dark ,its not really at its best if the room is light ( in the day l simply close the blinds ) so that can be a pain in the ass sometimes, and also the bulb costs about $400 every couple of years ( depending on how much you use it).

Start with the room you have in mind for the projection. It should most likely be dedicated for movies as watching regular TV is not practical. The darker the better. The LCD's are bright and high enough res now to get the job done and are most versitile.

Had a projector in my old townhouse. It was bright enough to use during the day no problem. It was awesome until the bulb burned out.

I bought a full hd one and used it all winter for ps3. Now its too bright out to use it except past 11pm...

Overall, I can't say I regret it at all.

Have a $6k Sony projector from best buy. Screen alone was $200 and bulb replacements are $300.
It's a bit too big to use with the ps3 games, gets me dizzy. But I often stream movies and love hd material on it.

If you can setup a dedicated theatre, go for it. 150 inches is fun to watch!

I have stoped watching TV since buying a projector. Worth rembering to get the whole 5.1 sound systen too.

Die Hard 4 is truly a cinema experence with big picture and full on sound.

Also you can watch the classics as they were first shown, Try "the Big Country" in fantastic wide screen black and white with a great music score pounding out.

There are screens which help with lit rooms too, get one of those. They have special coating that maximizes reflection from light sources straight at it and lowers reflection from lightsources coming from the sides.

That together with a high lumen projector makes it ok with rooms that have some light

one other point, the dark room is good !

If you watch a film with people on TV in a lit room they yak all the way through the film.

Projected in a dark room most people shut the fuck up and watch the movie.... a big plus.
