The reason so much information and services are free (as in 'gratis') is because people are making money online.

Exactly! My site, my property, my decision. If I want to plaster my sites with ads than I have the right to do so. If someone wants to pay for adspace using his own money, than that is his right to do so.

The fact that other people are putting ads on their sites in no way stops YOU from freely sharing information.
