Just got home with my wife after a VERY long trip from St Petersburg, Russia to Uruguay. I'm talking 3 planes and over 30 hours between delays, airport layovers, and problems with the volcano in Chile. Despite all that, it was 100% worth it. We had an incredible time. Our Russian friends showed us the true St Petersburg.

It was great. This place had the kind of menu that if I lived in St Petersburg I would try everything on it. Very expensive and fancy place right in the Peterhof summer palace garden.

This next pic left be literally breathless when I looked it. This is a city for people who appreciate art. The entire city breaths culture through its pores. It's really something else.

How safe is it for a single traveler without any local guides/friends?

If you are the kind of person who isn't too shy to make an effort to be understood, you will enjoy yourself. Not sure if that makes any sense. It never felt dangerous at all. But if you don't communicate, you won't learn anything.

Also, we visited during the White Nights, so it was daytime all the time. It was almost always cloudy, so the city seemed to be in a constant dusk, which was perfect for the atmosphere. People were out on the streets all day and night. It was 11 pm and you had the sun in your face.

Saw a lot of Hummer's in St Petersburg. And also Hummer limos (too bad I didn't get any pics of those)
