PINETOP, AZ - Authorities say a woman was seriously injured in a bear attack in Pinetop Tuesday night.

Arizona Game and Fish spokesman Bruce Sitko said the woman from Gilbert was walking her dog in a Pinetop Lakes Country Club neighborhood around 11:30 p.m. when the adult male black bear attacked her.

According to a Game and Fish news release, the attack occurred about 60 feet from a dumpster where the bear was scavenging.

A passing motorist was able to scare the bear away.

The woman was air-lifted to a Scottsdale hospital where she went into surgery for scratches and puncture wounds. She is expected to survive her injuries, Sitko said.

Sitko said Game and Fish and law enforcement officers found a bear in the vicinity a few hours later and destroyed it. It will be taken to the Department of Public Safety lab where it will be confirmed that it is the bear that attacked the woman. If not, a search will be immediately conducted to find the right bear, officials said.

Game and Fish said bear attacks on humans are rare, with only six documented cases in Arizona since 1990.

mental note: dont make eye contact and find something to climb :helpme

With all the wild fires here in AZ, along with the dry climate and limited food, I am not surprised to of hear something like this happening. The wildlife is moving closer to many towns in order to eat and drink ;)

I saw McCain talking about this. Tragic, and apparently the bear is an illegal immigrant.

A few little towns here in eastern Washington have been dealing with coyotes coming into the towns, grabbing small pets and trash to eat. It comes down to animals needing to eat and what is going on in their natural habitat. Hope that lady makes it and sure keeps you guessing when you can get attacked in town by a bear.

animals are being pushed out of their natural habitats by humans, natural and un-natural disasters.
humans are now fair game.

Who would you sue for a random bear act?

L-Pink 06-29-2011 07:14 PM

i take it her dog was no help in distracting the bear.

heh, good luck on stopping a raging bear with that. it might eventually kill him, but they'd probably find your partially devoured remains in his stomach;)

Must have been serious wounds if she was flown all the way to Scottsdale from Pinetop...

Probably find the dog saw the bear and disturbed it from bin robbing by barking at it.

brassmonkey 06-30-2011 06:45 AM

the lady was not even near the trash. the bear ran across the parking lot. from what i saw he couldnt see her. maybe it was some perfume or something she was wearing.
