UK living

Hello UK people,

I want to be realistic, can you tell me , on average, what would be a living cost in UK Midlands.

So far I have figured out housing J450-J600pcm for 3 bedroom house.

What about:

1) Gas
2) Electricity
3) Council tax??
4) Internet
5) tv
6) food for 4
7) public transport ( bus? ) monthly pass
8) chinese/indian/sushi eating out
9) Small car 5 year old ( like Vauxhall ) cost and insurance
10) Bottle of beer

You name it what I missed :)

Thank'Ya!

AdultKing 07-22-2011 07:48 AM

£175 pw is basically the poverty line so work your way up from there.

TV License was about £150 per year last time I checked.

If you are a hard worker, in the UK, that is trying to make an honest living for yourself, and paying taxes... Your fucked...

But, if you wanna be a waste of space, stick a needle in your arm, and do drugs... The council pay for it all...

Personally I wouldn't live in the Midlands, I live in the sunny south. But I doubt prices are very much different. Unless you want to live in some scummy shit hole.

Not anywhere that is anywhere near livable it wouldn't be. For a three bed house thats nothing flash, but ok area, you will need about £1000 ($1600) a month

1) Gas £1000 ($1600) a year
2) Electricity £1000 ($1600) a year
3) Council tax?? £1500 ($2400) a year
4) Internet £100 ($160) a year
5) tv £150 a year ($240)
6) food for 4 Depends on how much you eat? We feed 2 plus 2 children for £600 ($900) a month at least
7) public transport ( bus? ) monthly pass Never used a bus, only scum bags and smelly people go on busses
8) chinese/indian/sushi eating out, depends on how much you eat, but you can get away with £60-£100 for 4 without wine and eat decent enough
9) Small car 5 year old ( like Vauxhall ) cost and insurance Depends how much rust it has
10) Bottle of beer in the pub? £3.20 ($4.80)

I was thinking that too, but I'm sure there's a valid reason.

Most of the nicest places in the UK have no jobs, so one of the greatest things about working online is that you can go and live in some obscure cheap place that has no jobs, but does have beautiful scenery and a low crime rate, while everyone else has to head off to the slums

I wouldn't

3 bedroom house with garden, unfurnished, very nice area, but only low paid tourist jobs = £550 per month.

Will be different to that in the cities

You reading the Mail again?

Serge Litehead 07-22-2011 08:07 AM

if you don't have/want TV, do you still pay tax for it?

Some truth in this. If you earn £100,000 + you'll be ok, but if you're on say £30,000 or less then maybe the council house people are better off, depending on how many offspring they produce

Depends how you define decent, but I'm in a tourist area of Wales (by Snowdownia and the sea) with a low crime rate and just down the road from some of the best schools in the country. If people in London knew about the lifestyle here and could work remotely I'm sure a lot would relocate. Then house prices and rent would go up, so I won't mention it to them

Sid70 07-22-2011 08:14 AM

There is a valid reason and i'm trying to figure out things. I found UK buses and trains pretty good, may be because I live in a shit hole myself.

Some people have a TV and try saying they don't watch it or that they only use it for computer games, the Gestapo never believe it

Everyone knows Wales is cheap, they chose not to live there because its a)full of Welsh people and b) It's possibly the most boring place on the planet outside of Leeds

:winkwink:

People who use buses usually smell of urine :2 cents:

It's cheap as it has no jobs. They always try to stimulate the economy here but it never works. Tourism and council jobs are the only things that keep Wales going.

Where I live isn't boring, lots to do here. I know other parts of Wales are very quiet and some people will find that boring.

I've lived all over the UK, moving every few years. London, Liverpool, Cambridge, Milton Keynes etc and so far this is by far the best place I've found, especially to bring up a family

B.Barnato 07-22-2011 08:26 AM

The standard of living and quality of life in the UK is crap, compared to most other european countries at least.

But I am sure you know that already so good luck.

As mentioned above you might be underestimating the housing cost, or overestimating the area those prices are quoted in.

I paid at least 300 pounds for a shitty little room in a shared house as a student and that was about 7 years ago. And by shitty I mean damp, Victorian Age brick housing the interiors redone with what seemed to be plywood and mdf, which is pretty common I fear.

Wales is where people who can't afford to live in England live. In the same way as Canada is for poor Americans

You won't pick up the accent from the Midlands, no-one there speaks English. You can pick up a multitude of other languages though.

It's no shock to see another immigrant making a beeline for the midlands. I was born there and lived there for 30 odd years before i decided to get the fuck out of the shithole.
