Scientists at Cern have managed to trap elusive antimatter atoms for a quarter of an hour. It is a huge step forward on last year?s efforts when they were able to hold the mysterious particles for just a fraction of a second.

Well it could be used for cheap, limiteless and green electric power. Of course as soon as the sscientist develop that technology they will be met with an unfortunate lab "accident" that will kill them and destroy all their work.

I thought that too. But too many governments will want it for a weapon. So they will kill them but take the technology, then use it for green energy while making weapons. :1orglaugh

Unfortunately that is what all the doomsday-lovers will say. They will scream "but what if", and impede progress. Even worse, some others will call it "God's energy" or some bullshit saying we should not explore it, and forever keep our heads in the sand.

I get the fuel part but you'd still need really fast engines that are capable of travel faster than the speed of light for real interstellar travel considering the distances involved...

There has long been plenty of comments on conservative forums to the effect of "we shouldn't try to understand God's ways" in regards to this type of science.

These types of people are the bane of human progress since they come in large numbers and thus have the power to stifle development. Research into human embryo stem cells was set back a decade because of them.

Unfortunately, their preaching only gets louder and carries more weight in bad economic times as the weak grasp for something to believe in.
