The West Memphis Three may be freed in a few hours

If you have ever seen the documentaries Paradise Lost and Paradise Lost 2 you will know who I am talking about.

Basically, those movies document the arrest and trial of three teenage boys who were charged with the murder of two younger boys in a small town South Carolina in 1993. They were basically the only three kids in town that wore black and listened to Metallica and were considered devil worshipers. One of them is about 2 IQ points above being legally retarded. He made a statement that implicated the three of them as the killers. The trial was a joke, they were convicted and all the appeals were denied even though they were packed with evidence that these guys didn't do it and that someone else did. The problem was the same judge that did the trial oversaw the appeals and he didn't want to look bad so he denied everything.

After 18 years it looks like they are being set free. There are stories saying that all three have been removed from their cells and are meeting with a judge in the morning before a hearing is to take place. Reports are they took all their belongings with them and won't be coming back.

Here is the story.

I've been following the story ever since seeing the movies and I am convinced these three are innocent. luckily for them even after 18 years in prison they are still pretty young and potentially have a lot of life left to live.

Crooked judges should be tar and feathered.

That might be a shred of the "justice" they have sworn to uphold.

Based on the documentaries it seems very likely they were wrongfully convicted, so this is good news (even though 18 years too late).

Glad to hear I know there was a bunch of people that have been working on this case probono for awhile now.

Mutt 08-19-2011 05:32 AM

they are going to have one helluva big lawsuit against the state.

Ask someone who spent that much time in jail how much life they have left to live.

if we there not criminals when they went in, 95% chance they will be now.

My cousin is one of the directors... I remember watching the dailies while they were in the process of shooting footage back in 1994. I felt they were innocent back then even.

Haha!

Guilty as hell.

Good news... saw the doc and just didn't see how they were guilty.

Just saw it. They had to enter enter an odd plea that allowed them to basically say they are innocent while admitting that the state might have evidence against them, but they are free. A good day for justice.

True. They are going to have the prison mentality and have a long road ahead of them. Hopefully they can find peace and don't end up doing something stupid and going back to jail. My point was that they are in their 30's so technically they have a lot of life left to live. Hopefully they can do something good with it.

Actually I think it's a terrible day for justice. It took 20 years and celebrity attention for this to happen. How many people are sitting behind bars with no chance of getting out because they don't have as compelling of a story? I certainly don't have an answer but any day that an innocent man spends behind bars is a day too many.

I'm sure there are plenty of people that are innocent sitting behind bars. Our system isn't going to change in a day, but to me this was one step forward and hopefully it can open some eyes and help effect change for the future. Most importantly this case shows how important DNA evidence can be so hopefully we will be using more and more of that in the future to make sure that innocent people are not sent to jail.

not only did the have to plead guilty to be set free (so they can't sue the state), but they also got 10 years probation....

All good reasons to stick with the North, the West and the coasts, except for Southern coasts...
