Gmail shortcuts

I need to find all of my unread e-mail that is not labeled yet, or in my inbox. is:unread will display unread messages in other labels as well, which I do not want.

Hmm. Best I can find is this:
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/a...en&answer=7190
which states there is no option for finding unlabelled messages. Depending on how many labels you use I wonder if you might try an approach based on specifying labels and negating it so that those labels do not show effectively showing all the others?

Hmmm... does this work?

-label:label1 -label:label2 +is:unread

or

-label:label1 -label:label2 is:unread

??????????????????

If so you owe me one. ;)

I don't get what your saying, but if you let me know shoot me an email. I know Gmail top to bottom and actually have a few buddies who work with Google. Let's see if we can get you squared away.

He wants to read his unread mail in his inbox only by doing a search for it. However, the search is pulling unread from every label/folder. So for instance, SPAM or trash.

He wants Gmail to only display the unread messages from his inbox.

If you don't know what I'm saying, then you don't know Gmail top to bottom.

This works fine for me.

-label:label1 -label:label2 is:unread in:inbox

But if you have thousands of labels that would be tedious.

I think another approach would be to put a blue star on all messages with labels then use:

-has:blue-star is:unread in:inbox

You can apply the star using filters and apply to existing conversations.

AFAIK, in:inbox is:unread shouldn't be pulling in spam or trash by default nor other folders but they do have different inbox configurations. Perhaps yet another option is to temporarily change the inbox config to be standard then do "in:inbox is:unread"

Pretty good trick. Thanks for going to the trouble of figuring it out. I will give it a shot tonight.

You're welcome. It only took a minute and I just learned it myself. :)
