iPhone vs Android

Someone stole our iphone from my wife's purse at her work, so we need a new phone.

I had a 3GS.

Should I get another iPhone or something Android based? What are the best android phones? Is there a new one coming out soon?

d-null 09-08-2011 09:28 PM

right now Samsung galaxy S2 is an amazing choice :thumbsup

NetHorse 09-08-2011 09:35 PM

The S2 is the best Android, which the iPhone 5 will be released to compete against.

Android:

Open source.
Way more available customization options
Widgets
More available phones, some with larger screen sizes
More available plans, networks
Free apps
Windows filesystem, (I HATE itunes)

iOS
Way more security in 3rd party applications, (unless you jailbreak).
Highest resolution display
Most battery life
Slimmest
Most available total apps
Most fluid OS.

Toss up.

ExtremeBank_Adam 09-08-2011 09:35 PM

Had an iPhone, switched to Sprint HTC Evo. Phone is ok... hate Sprint, so gonna switch back to AT&T once they get the Samsung Galaxy S2, next week I think.

Wife and all the kids all have iPhones... they love them. I like Android better.

cooldude7 09-08-2011 09:56 PM

go for samsung galaxy s2...

or any phone with android., its the future.

drmadcat 09-08-2011 09:58 PM

Android + htc = great
i dont like Samsung very unreliable

Zorgman 09-08-2011 10:09 PM

Wait for Iphone5. It's not that far away.

papill0n 09-08-2011 11:02 PM

the s 2 is a fuckin awesome phone

highly recommend it Socks

and fuck I hate theives - sorry about your loss there

Intrinsic 09-08-2011 11:10 PM

I was going to get the S2 but I hear the S3 is coming out in 2012

MPGdevil 09-09-2011 03:32 AM

I switched from 3GS to Samsung Galaxy S2 little over a month ago.

What an amazing difference. I can't beleive how ancient the iPhone feels compared to this new Android device.

Go with the S2 as already recommended several times here.

seXXXhub 09-09-2011 04:00 AM

You got that right ! I own a Samsung Galaxy S 2 and its waaaay better than a Iphone 4 :):pimp

I don't see how this is a benefit.

You may see the benefit the first time you need something that isn't in the app store. Sure, you can hire someone to write something. iPhone developers are generally script kiddies, much like Flash developers. (iPhones didn't even come out until what, 2003?)

If I needed an app to control the gas valves on my moonshine still (*boom*) or what not, I'd probably look elsewhere. Someone with 20-30 years of experience in my opinion isn't going to corner themselves into a platform that is proprietary.

Baby-shake away.

calvinawe 09-09-2011 04:35 AM

I'd also recommend a Samsung Galaxy S2

martinsc 09-09-2011 04:45 AM

i just love android:thumbsup

BIGTYMER 09-09-2011 04:53 AM

iPhone ftw.

candyflip 09-09-2011 05:24 AM

Why not track down the iPhone and get it back? Fuck the person who took it right in the ass.

I own nothing but Apple computers, but no iPod, iPhone or iPad. Android ftw!

Harmon 09-09-2011 05:31 AM

iphones are to android as mazda miata is to ford f350

paymeback 09-09-2011 06:26 AM

The first iphones were great but after being on a rooted android device i wouldn't piss on a iphone to save its life

Choopa Phil 09-09-2011 06:40 AM

the Bionic is going to be sick!

wdforty 09-09-2011 06:56 AM

iPhone was #1 back in the day, no doubt.

IMO, you'd be crazy to buy one in today's market though. Way too many cool phones out there and the Android OS just keeps getting better.

Especially if you have any kind of tech background/knowledge - Android is the clear choice.

awmnet 09-09-2011 07:52 AM

samsung galaxy s2 is the best choice for sure

xarizmendi 09-09-2011 09:48 AM

Id say samsung galaxy s2, the display on that thing is amazing, but i'd rather have a phone with an actual keyboard, so im getting the droid3

FlowerKid 09-09-2011 09:55 AM

Nokia 3210

AdultRecruiting 09-09-2011 10:03 AM

iPhone hands down wait for the iPhone 5 it should be announced any day now

Rochard 09-09-2011 10:21 AM

I have the Android X from Motorola. Love it. Huge fucking screen, does everything I need. I run ALL of my pop3 through Gmail, and the Android phone runs Gmail perfectly.

At this point, a phone is a phone - they all do the same things.

Scott McD 09-09-2011 10:22 AM

Samsung Galaxy S2...

Monique Niccole 09-09-2011 10:27 AM

Since she probably needs a new phone sooner rather than later, the HTC Evo 3D is pretty sweet.

http://www.htc.com/www/smartphones/htc-evo-3d/

Personally, I'm waiting to upgrade to the iPhone 5.

Socks 09-09-2011 10:33 AM

Thanks for all the info, I'm going to Mexico for a month in a few days, so I'll probably wait until I come back. Apparently her brother has an old iphone there we can have, but he says it's "locked" I guess to a carrier there.. So I'm assuming that's what "unlocking" is actually for.

I think I'll end up with an S2, but waiting to see the iphone 5 will be an advantage either way.. There will be teenagers who spent $600 on an S2 and then decided to go iPhone 5 and sell their slightly used S2's. I haven't had a contract in like 12 years, don't think I should start now.

I don't see how this is a benefit. If anything this is a hindrance, I'd rather use software that a company stands behind than an open source alternative.

Yes because they can't bother thinking things through so they present you with a smorgasbord of options you don't really need.

+1

Both offer that.

Itunes is great. Most people that say this are mostly just unwilling to open up to new horizons.

For the record I own an iP4, just trying to objective.

What carrier have you been with? Honestly, if you're going to be with the same carrier for 2 years regardless you can save a lot of money. iPhone 5/S2 will likely be $200 with a 2 year agreement, if you have to cancel and pay the early termination fee it probably won't be more than the difference to buy a new iP5/S2 without a contract.

Kenny B! 09-09-2011 11:27 AM

I have the new samsung and as great as android is, jailbreak an iphone and it's just as good if not better

KillerK 09-09-2011 11:48 AM

If you use a iphone, most likely you will hate the droid os, it's a pile of shit.

So many things work different or not as good. I'm currently on a droid because I wanted 4g, so i'm stuck unless I want to give up the speed.

bronco67 09-09-2011 01:39 PM

I just got the Bionic today, and its pretty fucking sweet.

just a punk 09-11-2011 12:37 AM

Android wins for sure.

The Ghost 09-11-2011 12:57 AM

iPhone4, best phone i've ever used/owned. Not an Android fan at all.

raymor 09-11-2011 01:18 AM

Apple makes a nice system, with their OS on their hardware playing their music and running their approved apps. They then then try to make sure that you, the user, doesn't mess up THEIR phone.

Google says "here's a ton of cool shit for YOUR phone. Do whatever you want with it, but here are some of the cool things you can do."

Of course Steve Jobs has a suggestion:
"People who want to see stuff like that [porn] should get an Android phone." - Steve Jobs

Google, HTC, and the other companies that work with Android haven't commented about what content you view because they think it's YOUR phone to use however you see fit.

Some people really like Apple's box. I prefer not to be stuck in a box. For example, hardware. With Apple, there's one hardware choice, take it or leave it. With Android, there are hundreds of options for hardware. You can choose one with a faster processor, more memory, lower price, brighter screen, whatever you want. Apple - you get the processor they say, the screen they say, etc. Some people like Apple's choices or still feel that's the "in" thing. Others like the freedom to choose.

And to your mind Google and HTC don't qualify as companies.

You're someone who prefers proprietary rather than own source. That's cool.
So presumably rather than a server system such as Linux or FreeBSD your site runs from a Windows desktop. Cool. I suppose you'd never use Wordpress because it's open source so rather than one company behind it there are thousands of Wordpress programmers ready to serve your needs. That's cool. SOMEBODY has to keep buying FrontPage. I think Windows are good places to through Front Page out of. Different strokes for different folks.

CurrentlySober 09-11-2011 02:23 AM

i cant afford any phone... :(

suesheboy 09-11-2011 05:29 AM

Heheheheh damn good point, and wish I would have mentioned it myself.

For all the rest of you that are attempting to run "servers" on Windows please don't take offense, but do slither back under your rocks.

Yeah, they're fucking brainwashed. Almost everyone in my immediate family and circle of friends has an iPhone. When I showed any of them my Droid Bionic, which is arguably the most intense cell phone to be released so far, they couldn't be bothered to even look at it -- even if they have an iPhone 3. It's like nothing else even exists.

That's what pisses me off about them. I've spent some time with iPhones, I know what they can do, etc but I choose Android (because of the diversity).

iPhone people are just like "iPhone...duh...durka durka. iPhone does this...look." -- not realizing that every Android phone does the same shit, and probably better in most cases.

When I went into the Verizon store to get my Bionic, the sales guy tried to get me to wait for the iPhone 5, because he's one of those people. He showed me this video...

---not realizing the technology is years away, and that the video is just a concept by some Mac fanboy dreamer. So it's fake. Facepalm.

I got my sister in law Klipsch $350 earbuds as a Christmas present. She still uses the stupid white crap iPod headphones(BTW, those things are the skateboard of earbuds). She gave the Klipsch earbuds to her boyfriend, who uses them as his "backup" headphones(he also uses the white iPod earbuds). This is the mentality of those zombies. They would rather listen to shit earbuds, but make sure everyone knows they're one of the cool people. It would be the worst thing for someone to see them with black earbuds.

If you're an Apple freak and don't think like this, excuse me -- but most of you are fucking sheep.

To the original poster, don't be one of those sheep.

Horny Joe 09-11-2011 10:24 AM

I have the Galaxy S (not S2) and I am happy with it. Still, I will get the new iPhone 5 when it comes. If she can wait a couple of weeks to see and feel the iPhone, do that. If not, S2 is the best Android right now.
