Feedback for a potential artist friend of mine

This isn't my work. I've been watching my good freind develop his skills over the past few years. And I think he's ready to quit his 9-5 and follow his passion. He's mainly into CG....PLease bear in mind that this is part time now... just a hobby for him. BUt do you see what I see..... talent???
The subject doesnt quite add up.... and its not related to our line of work. But I digress.... can i get some feedback for the lad.

porno jew 10-06-2011 01:00 AM

gimme-website 10-06-2011 01:02 AM

But is he ready? Bills have to be paid man... food has to be put on the table. Could he earn??????

porno jew 10-06-2011 01:04 AM

Pretty good is what I would call it too. He's infinitely better than I am or ever will be but IMHO pretty good isn't good enough to work for one of the studios or a game company etc. Again, he's better than most people who have the same dream, but still a ways to go from dropping his portfolio on a company and getting a job.

:2 cents:

If I could get that 4'x6' I would hang that on my wall. Minus the "Grim Reaper Says" stuff. Text usually doesn't belong in "art" omi

Positive/negative/constructive... please keep the feedback coming.

TubeSubmitters 10-06-2011 01:50 AM

Don't see any windfarms???

gimme-website 10-06-2011 01:53 AM

yeah... i know the subject didnt quite tally with the content.
BUt what do you think? Could he earn a living as a freelancer?

TubeSubmitters 10-06-2011 01:59 AM

No idea what the market is for people doing odd gfx, what's wrong with doing it part time til he knows its profitable?

gimme-website 10-06-2011 02:08 AM

Well thats just soemthing hes been working on for shits and giggles. IM sure he could equaly apply z-layer (cant rememeber the technique name) tricks to flatten images and create some killer toons. I just dont want to fill his head with dreams of stardom if he's not got what it takes. Ya know....

You can be the best artist and barely make a buck and you can be average as an artist and make a ton of money, it depends on many factors such as branding, marketing, choosing the right market, the right product for the right market and so on. I'm sure you're aware of it though.

If we speak talent wise only, yeah, it looks good overall, but can you really judge by one image only?

He can keep his jobs and slowly build a business with the design stuff. When and if the design business grows, he can quit the day job. I'm sure you know this as well. :)

Impressive work. Should go for it.

L-Pink 10-06-2011 05:57 AM

He's pretty talented. But start small and see what happens. He should keep his present job until it makes economic sense to quit.

.

2MuchMark 10-06-2011 06:47 AM

There are dozens of top visual effects companies and probably close to a hundred others that could be found with a Google search. Why not suggest that your friend put together a resume containing samples like this and send them out? It looks great and he's clearly really talented.

gimme-website 10-06-2011 06:50 AM

Something else he said to me before headingoff to tthat 9-5 "I am wanting to do the more 'technical' side of CG rather than the arty side. So I am gonna do photo manipulation, technical illustration, 3d modelling etc"

CaptainHowdy 10-06-2011 06:52 AM

Nothing groundbreaking but can make a full time occupation of it ...

Hentaikid 10-06-2011 08:44 AM

Art as a career needs to be applied to a goal. That's a nice illustration, but the format seems to be that of a political cartoon, with the message and all. I guess he needs to focus on a specific outlet for his skills, is what I'm saying.

gimme-website 10-06-2011 08:57 AM

Agreed hentaikid. Ive asked him if he is doing this for love or money. If its for money.. then he needs to concentrate on a product that can be sold.
