Doctors in China saved a man's partially-severed finger - by attaching it to his stomach.

Furniture worker Wang Yongjun, 20, cut off the end of his middle finger with an electric saw in an accident at work.

Wang, of Liaoyang, Liaoning Province, was rushed to hospital where doctors had to think fast.

Dr Huang Xuesong said the muscle and skin had been cut away from the end of his finger leaving only the bone showing.

"We had to make a quick decision or he could have lost his finger. We decided to cultivate a new fingertip on his stomach," he said.

Doctors operated and attached Wang's finger to his stomach in the hope that new skin and muscle would grow around it.

Dr Huang said the technique was a way of restoring blood circulation to the injured finger so that the body could repair itself.

He says the surgery was a complete success and that Wang would have a brand new fingertip - separated from his stomach - within a month.

That is pretty interesting, I wonder how it will look after surgery.

This article leaves so many questions unanswered.

- Is this common practice? I've never heard of it before.
- If it is common practice, why isn't this being used on people here in the states when they lose fingers or toes. My step father just had his finger tip removed above the knuckle last month because the part of the finger that was cut off could not be found, why was this option not presented to him?
- Could this practice be used to save entire limbs in some way?
- Could we grow other parts of our bodies, ears, noses, etc on our stomachs or other areas?

Man, I love/hate articles like this.

You know how us Westerners are behind in the times with groundbreaking health solutions. Actually, I watched a whole series on the Discovery Channel a while back about the different breakthroughs in science that is allowing victims of limb loss either regrow appendages from other parts of their bodies or in labs using stem cells harvested from the person who needs the body part.

Found something on YouTube that was similar:

This guy at work lost his thumb and they did similar by sewing to his stomach but that was only for healing not replacing.I guess the thumb is a major part of the anatomy
