Distributing your network out, how many hosts do you use?

This question gets asked a lot probably but when linking sites together you don't want them on the same server, at least these days were SE can sniff out self promotion.

So how many hosts do you use for your network and is there a set formula that you've come up with by playing around to see what is acceptable and best fit for the SE?

virtual hosting is so cheap most people use 10+ hosts that interlink sites.

See the thread on this topic from two or three days ago. Most people here will strongly disagree with the top five SEO experts in the world and the Google engineers who say it makes absolutely no difference from an SEO perspective. Every part timer worries about it. The pros who have been doing SEO full time for fifteen years say that's a waste of time.

you dont need to worry about it

I should perhaps clarify - I went searching for a top expert or two, perhaps an engineer from a make SE, to support my request for more IPs. I was dissapointed when all of the notable experts I talked to or found quotes from said I was wrong - I didn't need more IPs. I don't claim to be an expert myself, far from it. A long time ago I was known as "Ray the search engine guy", but that was a long time ago. I'm just posting what the experts told me.

All I know is if my site gets link from an .edu site then I am number one.

unless you're splogging or spamming, the diversified hosting isn't necessary

This...I'm using 4 shared hosting accounts at different hosts and it costs me practically nothing yet powers all of my blogs.

As far as I understand it, Google compares text. If you duplicate text to another site it will get much lower ranks but the site you copied the text from will keep its position. To be sure I spread sites over different ip's in different neigborhoods, my main server has 20 ips and my sites rank fine. Of course the pirate sites that show my stolen content rank even better :1orglaugh
