The dictionary pisses me off

If enough people say and write a slang or mis-spelled word, suddenly it ends up in the dictionary.

Example.... It's not "addicting".... it ADDICTIVE.

grrr.

'Addicting' is a word.

An ADDICT who has become ADDICTED to an ADDICTIVE substance did so by using, thus ADDICTING himself to it.

Another example might be that pushers generate repeat business by ADDICTING their customers to their product.

If language didn't evolve everybody would still be saying "Ug" for everything like cavemen.

baddog 11-18-2011 12:08 PM

Since when is addicting and ug not words?

ottopottomouse 11-18-2011 12:53 PM

Tuesday.

People use the word wrong, it's not incorrect.

Drugs can be addictive because certain chemicals are addicting.

Wouldn't you say "It's addictive"?

Elli 11-18-2011 01:27 PM

A substance has addictive qualities, not addicting qualities. Wouldn't this go back to some basic rules of what type of word is being modified?

Evil Chris 11-18-2011 01:44 PM

addicting is not a word.

The proper use is addictive.

This would seem to be correct. Although "addict" is usually a noun, it can be used as a verb according to my dictionary which is about 30 years old.

So you're pissed off that new words are being created? That happens a lot.

You can't refudiate these things.

Assdiction is catching up quickly.

marlboroack 11-18-2011 08:44 PM

Yeah, your right.

Relentless 11-18-2011 09:02 PM

The dictionary reports which utterances are being used often enough to be considered 'generally accepted' and nothing more than that. To have the dictionary editiors deciding what 'can be' allowed to be a word and what can not would give them far too much power.
