Why aren't we at 12ghz yet with cpus? Does clock matter now? What?

Did they hit the wall? What does it take to get a powerful cpu that will work its ass off fo one thread? I'm old, everything I run can only use one core

The problem is keeping them cool enough for them to function properly

If it is only one core? Or if they go over 3-4gb?

I have totally lost track of the cpu market...

I was wondering the same thing the other day and I am none the wiser even after a few hours googling.

It was so much easier when we just had the mhz number.

It's all relative. The clocks appear to stay in the same range, but those clocks are getting faster because the transistor sizes are getting smaller. So, 3.2 ghz today is way faster than 3.2 ghz from a few years ago. Also, core stacking and multi-threaded software is the way things are going.

A 3GHz Sandbridge CPU is going to be much faster clock for clock then say an old P4

It probably is not possible to write something that would make a single thread application able to use four threads, right? I mean .. well .. it would not be for the app, but for the cpu

It'd have to be on chip and amazingly intelligent, right? Don't some of the second gen i5/i7 know how to split the work of one thread between cores?
