Any Christmas movies to recommend?

one little known one I will recommend is a nice little thriller from about 1980 called Silent Partner with Elliot Gould.

Caligari 12-05-2011 07:44 AM

I personally like the original "Black Christmas" starring John Saxon and "Santa's Slay" which is a great little horror comedy.
Any film where Fran Dresher gets violently killed just spells out Happy Holidays;)

Santa Claus Conquers The Martians

A perennial fixture of most ?worst movies ever? lists, this 1965 science-fiction film, in which Santa is kidnapped by Martians for the purpose of handing out presents to Martian children, is a pretty kooky viewing experience. There?s no denying that it?s basically terrible, but it?s pretty damn funny in places too, and it?s adoption by the brilliant nineties comedy series Mystery Science Theatre 3000 has only served to grow its cult. There?s a musical based on the movie that runs in both Chicago and California. Someday I will attend. I will be truly happy to do so.

I watch Black Christmas every year. It must be the way it's shot or something because it creeps me out every time.

I loved that movie. Christopher Plummer was so good in it. Whenever I see anyone use their fridge as a safe, I think about Elliott Gould stashing the key in the jelly.

I'd agree with the others here who said the original "Black Christmas" and I actually didn't hate the remake. It had some pretty nasty kills in it and had a nice little mean streak running through it.

Another Christmas classic is of course "A Christmas Story"

^^^ Love that movie. Very controversial when it came out.

Controversy and reception

Silent Night, Deadly Night was one of the most controversial films of the 1980s because the killer is dressed as Santa Claus. The PTA fought to have this film removed from theaters due to its subject matter and the fact that it was shown around Christmas, although an earlier film with a similar premise had gone unnoticed.

Upon its original release in 1984, the film created serious controversy. Siskel and Ebert condemned the film and went so far as to read the film's production credits on air, saying "shame, shame" after each one. Siskel also said that all the money the filmmakers were making off of this film was blood money. Leonard Maltin also condemned the film, calling it a "...worthless splatter film", giving it zero stars and asking: "What's next, the Easter Bunny as a child molester?" Large crowds (mostly angry families) formed at theaters and malls around the nation to protest the film. TriStar Pictures, its original distributor, pulled all ads for the film six days after its release (November 15). The film itself was also withdrawn shortly thereafter due to the controversy.

It was later re-released by an independent distributor, Aquarius Films, beginning in spring 1986, with an ad campaign which replaced the original "Twas the night before Christmas" audio track with a new one that centered on the controversy surrounding the film and edited out all close-up shots of Billy, in the Santa suit, with weapons. The print ad material also replaced the original 'Chimney' picture with one that talked about the controversy.

In United Kingdom, the movie was never submitted for certification by the BBFC. As such, although it had never been actually classified as a Video Nasty, its distribution was prohibited in the UK. However, in 2009, Arrow Films submitted the film to the BBFC for classification, who passed the film uncut with an 18 certificate. The UK DVD was released on 23rd November, 2009.

Its sequel was denied a BBFC certificate in 1987.

Also liked the movie mentioned in the above quote as the "earlier film with a similar premise that had gone unnoticed."

^^ John Waters is quoted as saying Christmas Evil is "greatest Christmas movie ever made."

yeah Christopher Plummer was very scary, haven't seen the movie in years but i remember Elliot Gould banging a hot brunette in it. and for John Candy fans, he's in it in a small non-comedic role, very young.

Christmas Story is my all time favorite Christmas movie, i took last year off from it, i will watch this year. If there was a list of all time great movie Dads, Darren McGavin as Ralphie's old man would be right up there.

Part 2 consisted mainly of footage from Part 1, as Ricky tells his brothers story for most of the movie. Ricky eventually has his own story, but it's only for the last third of the movie.

Part 2 did spawn the internet meme "Garbage Day," though.

useless trivia: I was in a band "Black Christmas", named after the original...and oddly enough not the only Bob Clark movie I borrowed a band name from...the other was "Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things" (hard band name to put on a marquee though due to the length).

Even more useless trivia: Bob Clark directed both Black Christmas and A Christmas Story...two very different Christmas movies...

Sad that Bob Clark's last films were Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2 and The Karate Dog, he should have done some more horror...
