A Vegetarian diet KILLS MORE ANIMALS than a carnivore diet?! (SCIENCE)

Who'd a thunk it?! I'm vegetarian but saving animal lives is a secondary/tertiary reason I chose this lifestyle. Still, it is quite interesting to see the actual numbers behind one of the more popular reasons vegetarians give for their diet/lifestyle.

Published figures suggest that, in Australia, producing wheat and other grains results in:

* at least 25 times more sentient animals being killed per kilogram of useable protein
* more environmental damage, and
* a great deal more animal cruelty than does farming red meat.

How is this possible?

Agriculture to produce wheat, rice and pulses requires clear-felling native vegetation. That act alone results in the deaths of thousands of Australian animals and plants per hectare.

Humans are mammals, right?

Well mammals eat other mammals, it's natural.

Paul Markham 12-22-2011 03:51 AM

Won't read the whole article, because I'm going to watch TV.

Is this animals dying, being killed or not being born?

Still as most animals are now fed on corn meal, which has to be grown, I doubt if the survey took everything into consideration. The problem is too many people.

mersant79 12-22-2011 04:54 AM

I can't imagine myself as a vegetarian

Fletch XXX 12-22-2011 06:11 AM

i love it.

killing a few mice in a field by picking grain is equiv of meat factories raising baby animals to slaughter. millions of animals lead to slaughter watching each other die... yeah the poor mice.... suuuuureee its the same LOL

lemme tell you a secret, i was veg for 5 years and i still put out mouse trap if i have a mouse in my house.
fuckin common sense.

cows taste good, me like

barcodes 12-22-2011 08:35 AM

I stopped eating meat about a year or two ago. Wasn't because of the animals it was some shit someone linked on peta showing cows with tumors and shit going into the slaughter house, chickens filled with growth hormones, etc.

Honestly, I don't push it on anyone. I could care less who eats what. If I buy an egg roll or some fried rice and there's a little meat in there, fuck it. I just try to stay away from large amounts of it. Again, I still respect everyone's decision to eat or not eat it, just got a little grossed out watching those videos.

I do buy tofu chicken and beef when no one is looking though :Oh crap:Oh crap:Oh crap

you forgot that since the research comes from australia it is all upside down...so you need to take the inverse of those statements

well..there are classifications of mammals and indeed animals as a whole into three major categories.

herbivore...omnivore...carnivore

Ah we're never going to agree on anything at all here.

I remember an old joke about a vegeterian, goes something like this:

I was sitting in a cafe tucking into a nice juicy bit of steak when a fat woman walked in and took a seat at a nearby table.

She gazed accross to me and said: "do you know how that cow was killed?"

I replied: "No, why? are you vegetarian?"

She said: "Yes I am"

So I replied: "Obviously it starved to death because of you, you fat fuck"

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy

but don't read this because you know it's paranoid propaganda;)

Caligari 12-22-2011 08:58 AM

are there fat vegetarians?

i dont know many...since i left Guelph where i went to school i think i have only encountered a couple vegetarians...all were skinny...except one guy who was very large, but muscular not fat.

CurrentlySober 12-22-2011 09:00 AM

When I dont eat meat for a while (Cause I cant afford it...) i get funny turns and end up drowning pet cats in the canal...

ottopottomouse 12-22-2011 09:05 AM

Research seems to be based on per head count of animals rather than volume. Could murder a lot of field-mice before you have enough meat to replace a cow.

I am an avid hunter.

My sister in law is a staunch vegetarian.

The family went camping once. It was fucking awesome!

I caught some fish and started filleting them on the back of my suburban. She just about shit her pants and started BALLING... BALLING!!!

My brother asked if I could do it somewhere less prominent and I was like, WTF? You two are hardcore bible thumpers. Jesus ate fish! WTF is wrong with you people?!?!

Later that day a rabbit was scurrying around so I set up a trap and snagged the little fucker. Walked up on it with a nephew from a sister of mine and we beheaded it, skinned it and put it on the grill. Just as soon as the odor of cooking meat hit the air my sister in law busts out of her tent.

She wanted us to STOP cooking meat because she could smell it! Then she asks what it is we are cooking and my nephew lifts up the fur to show her. Wow...

About an hour later her and my brother are driving away... Fucking pussies!

I don't bloody know! :1orglaugh It's just a joke I remember.

There is a vegetarian restaraunt here, so if I ever get a chance to visit I will count how many fat people I see and ask them to take a survey to see if they are true veggies or just there for a health kick :thumbsup

They just used a fake stat to prove it - "* at least 25 times more sentient animals being killed per kilogram of useable protein"

So what? No one eats as much protein if they are a vegeterian so it is a not important but it allowed the headline.

CaptainHowdy 12-22-2011 09:44 AM

I'd wish I even make a decent meal for another living creature ...

Surely it's not worse for the environment to be a veggie,

I've seen plenty of studies showing the resources it takes to raise a kilo of meat and the carbon footprint if far greater to it's veggie counterpart.
