How frequently do you buy a new keyboard?

I mean cleaning it - taking out every button could be a big job, or some of you do?

BIGTYMER 12-31-2011 08:10 AM

Never done that. I use that air in a can.

x-rate 12-31-2011 08:20 AM

When I was running an in house studio I was changing keyboard every 2 month with all the lube, cigs etc... even if they were cleaning it every day!

femdomdestiny 12-31-2011 08:25 AM

I just wanted to buy new one today, it must be wireless and good for gaming

cooldude7 12-31-2011 08:27 AM

previously when i used to use the regular keyboard then i used to wash it by removing every single button, not the electric part.,like every 3 months.

but now i am using the idk what people call it., but its button's/key's are half cutt., and it doesnt stuck.,

so its good.,

BladeZ 12-31-2011 08:28 AM

Every 6 months a new keyboard and once a year a new mouse.

Logitech Illuminated Keyboard <--- best keyboard ever.

I actually got 8 spares in case they ever stop making them.

Jarmusch 12-31-2011 08:38 AM

When the keys are basically all glued together from all the dried cum, I start looking at new keyboards.

i'm not sure if the illuminating keys would work for me.. already handling the keyboard without looking at it at all.. the keys are slim as on a notebook?

Dishwasher -> airing cupboard.

raymor 12-31-2011 10:40 AM

Air compressor to blow it out and I use one for many years.

martinsc 12-31-2011 10:54 AM

about once a year i get a new one... but once in every two months or so I clean it with compressed air....

Spunky 12-31-2011 11:45 AM

I used to repair computers and accessories,If you want to make your keyboards like new, unplug and spray fantastic on it use a soft toothbrush to scrub and finally use air to blow it off, you can use it right away but make sure you blew it off good

CurrentlySober 12-31-2011 12:51 PM

Never - I steal mine from the local 'PC World' store... Crap security - They sleep on the job! :2 cents:

Vjo 12-31-2011 12:57 PM

Never. I have an old school HP with the big buttons and lots of space between keys that fits me like a glove. All the new ones now days are those smaller key ones with less space between keys or curved ergonomic.

I suppose you can find anything but why throw money away.

As long as all keys work I'd much rather clean it than buy another.

Good advice Spunky.

The keys are similar to what you'd find on a laptop but they travel a bit further when you press them. So more comfortable than a normal keyboard and more accurate than a laptop. Took me a day to get used to it, but now I work faster on a logitech illuminated keyboard than on any other keyboard I've ever tried.

btw: the lighting is optional.

Keyboards are fairly inexpensive, so I would typically just buy a new one.

How often depends on a lot of factors.

barcodes 12-31-2011 08:08 PM

My co worker bought the warcraft version of this keyboard for 100 bucks. I thnk there is a plain version for like 70 bucks.

The keys come off which are useful for gamers who want to switch between key sets but also make it very easy to clean.
There are some other cool features listed in the article as well.

I have spilled soda all over my keyboard so many times it's not even funny...still works! Also spilled an entire soda down my old CRT monitor...stopped working for a day but then started working again, guess the soda dried.

Yep .... I never believed it - but tried it a an experiment with an old Logitech that did not owe anybody anything, and HOLY HANNAH if it did not come out perfectly clean like new, and after thoroughly drying, it worked like new too!! :thumbsup

It has to go vertical in the TOP SHELF and DO NOT USE DETERGENT or heat dry setting ... and make sure it is dried thoroughly before plugging back in. (3-5 days should suffice)

We do our office (desktop) keyboards about once every 4 months now ... and usually replace them every second year anyways ...

Keyboards are extremely low voltage I/O devices, so liquids will not arc the circuitboards. Wash it and dry it thoroughly, and you're be good to go! :thumbsup

facialfreak 01-01-2012 12:22 AM

Of course its best that you have a "spare" keyboard to use while the dishwasher cleaned keyboard is drying ...

I always keep a few spare keyboards and mice around ... as downtime is costly, and its not always convenient to run out to Staples when a keyboard or mice decides to go to heaven ...

People look at me like I'm batshit insane when I tell them to do this. I have a great keyboard that I love, but it gets dirty. So into the dishwasher it goes.

I use laptops mostly so I never buy "new" keyboards when I upgrade to a new laptop... It just comes with the upgrade
